Freezing frustration & faulty floodlights
The frustrations continued again at the weekend with our home after an early morning pitch inspection.
By all accounts the referee carrying out the inspection was on the line at the Airdrie v Spartans Scottish Cup tie and made the decision at 10am before travelling up for his match.
Now I'm not sure what the rules and regulations are for these types of decisions but we certainly felt the pitch would have been playable by the scheduled 3pm kick off.
I'm aware that you can't leave the decision as long as that but surely a further inspection could have been scheduled for 11.30am - the journey from Coatbridge to Annan doesn't take that long.
Anyway that's not a decision for me to make but just a thought, and the cancellation means we have now been idle since the draw at Stenhousemuir on the 27 December.
Personally, I've been idle since the Berwick game two weeks prior to that one.
I did get a run out for the first half of our hastily arranged friendly against Penrith at Galabank on Tuesday. I thoroughly enjoyed being back on the pitch again and was quite disappointed not to stay on for the full 70 minutes.
I realise you're now thinking I've made a typing error but there was no mistake and you have read it correctly - I did say the full 70 minutes. That's because the generator powering the floodlights blew up midway through the second half!
I'm not going to tell you what the score was at the time but let's just say after being 2-0 up early in the second half things weren't exactly going to plan.
There was even a sneaky suggestion that our secretary Alan Irving may have turned the lights off deliberately
I have my own thoughts on what might have happened however. Alan Inglis hadn't been feeling very well but was going to be thrown on for 20 minutes towards the end of the game.
Jamie Dunbar and I were having a run about keeping ourselves warm and Shingles was complaining about how cold it was and how the game was going badly... 70 minutes on the clock and darkness; make your own minds up.
On a serious note now and Kevin Neilson has just signed a new contract with the club, meaning he will be with us until the end of season 2010/2011.
That's great news for the club and I fully expect Kevin to go on and captain the club for a good few years if he doesn't move on to better things. There have been recent rumours about scouts coming to see him and that's no real surprise considering his recent performances.
The club have also on loan and everyone has high expectations of him. He scored against us during an earlier loan stint at Montrose and got a goal in our friendly game against Penrith so hopefully there is more to come.
I've said before that I felt the manager would make a few changes during this transfer window and with the signing of Scott this has already started and I think there will be at least two more new faces.
This will possibly mean that a few players will leave the club and one of those will be Bryan Gilfillan.
Gilly is going back to his old club in Australia and is only awaiting his flight confirmation before he leaves us.
In case you're gone before my next blog - all the best Gills, I don't suppose there's a spare seat beside you!

In English please so that more than just you can understand it.
How does a tour of the ground on 3rd July mean that Annan have more supporters ?

If I've got time I'll make some tuna pasta but if not it will be something quick like scrambled egg.
It's more likely the night before I will have lots of pasta and chicken - at least that's what I'm saying beause the gaffer might be watching!

Is that normal? Surely the ref could not have been 'double-booked' as a linesman at another match? Please clarify.

KingArthuronice - usually what happens is a local referee will carry out an early morning pitch inspection to avoid the appointed official travelling. This is what happened and there was no double bookings.
fabregasrighttoe - we usually always train or if there is enough time between the call off and the game then we would sometimes play in the reserve fixture on the same day.
Hope I have cleared everything up!

I agree with you that a later inspection may have been better but I suppose had you been playing say, Elgin it would be a different story. I suppose we will just have to put up with weather disruptions.
Great result on Saturday and good luck for the rest of the season.
