Lumpty Dumpty

Chris Evans | 12:20 UK time, Monday, 29 November 2010

My Saturday Kitchen souffle roux was lumpy. What can I say? I panicked and overheated my milk just before we went on live on the air. Warm is good. Hot spells disaster.

As I saw the little globules of devastation forming in front of my eyes, I felt myself go weak at the knees. By the grace of God my souffles rose, but without a silky roux to start - they were never going to be what they could have been.

Six out of ten from a Michelin starred chef. More than I deserved. But oh what a serious amount of fun. It's good to be petrified on live television.

I must try and watch that Chris. I have been catching up on the sporting challenges. Very entertaining I must say. Well done for the skate boarding in particular.

Off to get 4 new tyres, and breathe a huge sigh of relief once they are fitted.

    Keep warm everyone, keep warm.

I must say that you handled the panic very professionally clp. As you said to James Martin, cooking and interviewing at the same time is difficult enough without being an amateur chef as well.

Nothing worse than a lumpy roux Chris - but 6 out 10 isn't bad.

We've now got lovely blue sky and sun shining on the snow. Little boy is playing on his ipad and bigger boy is out sledging. We got our wellies on and tramped through knee high snow to the local shop for bread and newspaper. Guess what - no bread, no newspapers, so we bought chocolate. Ho Hum.

Chris, I think you all did an amazing job on Saturday Kitchen - there were obviously a lot of tricky stuff going on and you all kept smiling

I've never made a souffle but watching you on Saturday made me think I could give it a go. I think everybody who watched that sauce go lumpy felt for you - it's the sort of thing that's happened to all of us at some point, usually just before the improtant guest arrived for dinner!

Hope the finger's feeling better - I physically winced this morning when I heard you had been told to put it in tumeric, that must have been agony!

60% is not to be sneered at Christoff!

Thoroughly enjoyed Saturday Kitchen, even though I missed the beginning as I was out buying the ADVENT CALENDAR!!! I have to say, the two members of the public at the Chef's Table hardly got a look in .....

And I'm loving the waistcoat look CLP!

I've never braved a hot souffle, but one of my speciality desserts is a cold lemon souffle - it got me thru my O level cookery exam with flying colours and is still splendid now. I also do a lovely chocolate mousse which is just divine!

I've been typing a lease all morning. The original document got corrupted so we thought we'd start afresh with a new one. Why don't legal docs have any punctuation? And what's with the herein, hereto, thereto, whereupon .... blah blah blah.

For goodness sakes - keep it simple!

    Right, nearly sandwich time.

    Hello CLP & Everyone.

Very cold here in Wirral with a white covering. According to the 2 week forecast the most we are going to get is light flurries.

I've never attempted a souffle Chris but I know what you mean, I get lumps in my gravy, coffees and cup-a-soup if the water is too hot. I think you are very cool on TV keeping your cool over something hot. I would have panicked, I sometimes panic in my own kitchen.

Hope everyone is OK and keeping warm.

    Afternoon All,

By heck Ma it's parky! A teeny tiny flurry of snow as I was walking to work, but nothing since, although the 24 hours forecast says heavy snow between midnight and three!! But I won't hold my breath.

I hope everyone is OK, especially Dozymac's Hubby out there gritting the roads xx give him a big hug from me xx

Chris, I have to say you did very well on Saturday, despite the lumpy roux. Now I'm a very basic cook, but I would have a cook off with anyone any day on making a white/cheese sauce with a roux - I pride myself on just how good I am at it xx me boasting....never ;)

Barmy, Bless the little penguins xx

Sezza, I felt a bit queasy when he was talking about his finger this morning, I hid my head under the pillow! Chris, I hope it heals soon xx

    Afternoon each!

Office still freezing, which I suspect is adding to my reluctance to get anything done (in fact I really shouldn't be on here at all, but hey ho). Panicking slightly too, seeing as it's less than four weeks to Annual Sprout Consumption day and I haven't really got too much done in the way of giftage. Anyone got any recommendations for `fun' presents, peferably in easy-to-wrap square boxes....

I missed it :( We'd gone to visit Mr Hannah's Grandaddy as he's really really poorly :(

Hi everyone from a very cold and snowy Ayrshire, well actually here at work there's just a light covering of snow but at home (only 11 miles away), it's a whiteout, if it wasn't for the fact that I took photos this morning I don't think they would have believed me in here.

I haven't watched Saturday Kitchen yet, will maybe watch this evening when David out gritting. He got home at 1pm yesterday, back out at 11pm, home at 8am and back out this afternoon at 4!

Hope you are all having a good day and keeping warm.

Deev, I am a worse dancer then Widdy, I have got no sense of rhythm what so ever, but my favourite dance has to be the quickstep, everytime it's on strictly I just love it!, I know it isn't in a film but never mind.

Impressive cooking score Chris. My mum nearly killed my father and me once with a banana soufflé. Never again. I'm sorry to hear of the finger-chopping incident; hope it's on the mend now. A word to the wise: when people mention a finger-buffet (and/or finger foods) - I don't think they mean it LITERALLY... poor lamb. Of course, a REAL man would have roasted the bit of finger up with the snips and put it on the table (with perhaps a nice Chianti...?).

My perfect movie dance would be from Moulin Rouge - either Your Song or the finalé. Or, actually, All that Jazz from Chicago. Jasper-dog's movie dance would be from the first Jack*ss film soundtrack - Roger Allen Wade's "If You're Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough"...

Everything was going so well, a bus came straight away, not too busy, and was managing to stay upright on the snowy/slushy pavements of Edinburgh... then all of a sudden, THUD!! Some of you may be pleased (if you aren't, then you've no need to read this paragraph any further) to hear that I am pledged to use my leisure(!) time for writing some pomes and short bits of nonsense in order to form a slim volume. Who knows, it may be next year's ideal Christmas present.

It's akshully sunny here atm, so I'll send some, together with love and kisses to all of you who are stuck in the snow...keep safe you lovely bundles!

Anyhoo, I've gotta scoot as I'm meeting a pal for lunch...

    love

    Hi everyone:

Ooooh, I just managed to get a minute to get on the blog, and wanted to wish the wonderful Hazel Love a Happy Birthday! And, I see I have just missed her!

Hazel: hope you have a really terrific birthday. xx Yes, please, re: the book, where do I sign up for a copy?!

Hope everyone is ok. No time to catch up with the blog - between being ill last week with some "bug" and then chaos at work, I haven't had a chance to see how everyone is.

There are no words that can describe the misery of the snow in our neck of the woods. MrS has been an absolute star - digging us out of the house for the past four mornings, and then helping me to get to work this week. He is so understanding that I am petrified of the snow.

Hope you are all coping with what's being thrown at (most) of us!

    C xx

Hazel - I'm so glad you enjoyed my rendition of 'happy birthday' earlier today!! My singing voice has been compared to the noise that a cat would make if its tail were trapped in a door, which I think is a bit harsh ....

Anyhoo, hope you have as wonderful a birthday as you can my darling and take care. Glad you liked the card and thanks to all who signed it, especially the main man, CLP.

CLP - A don't wanter say been there done that... But... when a used ter work as a pizza chef... A took the toppa me finger off a few times!!!!!!
