Almost Feel It's OK To Write About Summink Else Today

Chris Evans | 13:04 UK time, Thursday, 14 January 2010

If there is a Brekkie groove, I do believe we have found it. What a strange business this is though. I remember it was the Thursday of the first week of Drivetime until we began to feel like we knew what we were doing. Maybe that's it, maybe it's a four day thing.

So one week down and who knows how many to go. I can't tell you by the way how much I have enjoyed reflecting on all the different opinions and crits people have had regarding our new slot. A few years ago I wouldn't have had any of it and just buried my head in the sand, alienating any future potential audience but now, if we can get 'em - we want 'em, so why not listen to what everyone has to say ?

The more extreme the negativity though the less accurate the gripe, making it easier for me to spot people who will never see it our way - like the one guy who claimed the "majority" of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show audience were pensioners on low income and often house bound ! What ? Sure "some" of the audience may fall into one, two or even all three of those categories but the "majority" - not the best way of trying to secretly urge other people not to listen.

On my way to the new C4 book club show now. I did manage to read my last 200 pages of required reading albeit the last few in the car on the way there. The book - 499 pages of ghoulish goings on from a lady who apparently before this has focused mostly on lesbianism.

See you on the radio,

CLP

Hi CLP - just you and me again :-)
Loving the show - get to listen again during the day as I have to work I'm afraid but even if I'm a few hours late I'm still loving it

  • Comment number 2.

Sounds like an interesting read Chris!

  • Comment number 3.

Its a boring book, should have got the audibook then you can at least get on with something whilst you listen or as a woman would say 'multi-task' !!!!!

Still loving the new show and format and music selection is great.

    Keep um coming

Hi CLP - this is my first time I've posted a comment! A memorable day! Just wanted to say I loved you on the Drivetime Show, as much as I loved Terry on the Breakfast Show. You were the bookends to my working day! But you are doing a terrific job in the mornings, as I thought you would. Keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 5.

    Afternoon CLP

Did you read in the car? Ewwww ... instant way to be icky in my (proverbial) book! If I had a car with those screens on the backs of the seats I'd be permanently chundering my way thru journies!

My rule of thumb with a book: if the first chapter doesn't grab me, pull me in, engage me and make me want to progress to chapter 2, then forget it.

Likewise with fillums. If I don't like it, I'll fall asleep.

(unless there's something else to distract me, of course .....!)

Really don't want to be here in work, but ne'er mind. This time tomorrow I shall once again be thinking of my drive up to my new life, if only for the weekend, for now.

Is it 4th Feb yet .....

    Hey Chris

Have been reading some of the comments made by various people who are saying that you have to win over the existing audience. I agree to an extent but they are forgetting your Drivetime "on the way home from work" listeners who have swapped from their previous early morning, "on the way to work" station, to you..

  • Comment number 8.

Deev I know what you mean with the 1st chapter of a book. If i've not lost track of time by chapter 3 it's a no no for me.
I have so many half finished books that I could supply the River people!

    Hi CLP!

First time blog poster but loved you on Drivetime and while I loved the Togmeister you are just as good a tonic to set me up for a day of drilling and filling the teeth of small people. It's going great, keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 10.

Another excellent show today Chris - the new features are already becoming familiar - although I must admit to still not being sure about the quiz where you give away old stuff, but the headline game is excellent, and hello good bye has made me laugh for the last couple of days - and I'm getting used to you accompanying me on the way to work, rather than on the way home!

You're right to listen to constructive criticism, and you're correct, there is a minority of people who'll you'll never be able to please, so ignore the extreme criticism, take heed of the constructive, and you'll have zillions of listeners in a month or so!

Some people would complain about anyone taking over from Terry - the only comparison that's able to be made however is that you're now doing a breakfast show on the same radio station. You're not doing Wake up to Wogan, you're doing the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, and people need to judge it as its own product, not in comparison to anything else.

And, just to clarify, I'm not house bound, on a low income or a pensioner, so there's at least one of us not falling into that stereotype!

And I also now have no intention of reading the book you've read - 200 pages in a morning is pretty impressive going though!

    But was there a ghost?

  • Comment number 11.

Chris - damn. I've just bought that book. I've always loved her books, particularly Fingersmith which was a cracking story. I'll give it a go though.

    xx

  • Comment number 12.

    Hiyas

1stly - happy birthday Bingo - hope you have a good one x

Great show again Chris - I'm even getting the hang of the hello/goodbyes - found myself sitting in the car outside the garage waiting for them this morning - didn't want to miss them - a good sign that things don't take long to become familiar.

Off to catch up on yesterday's posts and grab some lunch

  • Comment number 13.

Hello - just wanted to let you know that I have reset my alarm for 6.55am. Before...the radio did not come on until 7.30am.

I was sorry to hear that Terry was going, of course, but my 7 year old son and I are enjoying listening to you at breakfast and also in the car to school. He especially likes hearing other kids on the radio and I think secretly he prefers your show.

The "hello/goodbye" slot makes me smile involuntarily. :-) What a nice way to end.

  • Comment number 14.

    Afternoon Chris,

I'm not a pensioner, housebound or on a low income so that counts me out as a majority listener!

Still loving the show, but I do have a very minor complaint - the "Go, Johnny, Go" music does my head in, especially as you play it twice. Can you just play it at the beginning of the section, or turn it down a bit - that's all. I hear that Lynn is getting more of a say, which is great. I loved the banter between her and Sir Tel.

Keep up the good work Chris, nobody ever walked into work on their first day and got it right from the beginning.

Hello to all the new Bloggers, it's good to read you.

Hello to the old Bloggers, hope you are fine and dandy xx

    Hi Chris,

    I think you're right - a 'day 4' thing!

Something twigged with me this morning as I was making the kiddies sarnies at 7.15. Having just about the first 20 minutes or so, just with you and the music seems about right to me. And then the team start chipping in.

Still a little way to go, but you're definitely on the right track!

As for the book, your comment this morning that 'there might be a ghost, there might not be. I don't really care' made me literally LOL in the car! Nice one!!

  • Comment number 19.

Good afternoon chris. I love the wrong bongs slot....

Hi to all bloggers and bloggettes and a happy birthday to bingo. Belated wishes to boozysusie. No snow so in work and wishing I was elsewhere to have snowday.

    Hiya Chris,

Yes, I agree: time to write about something else now .... except to say that the difference between this morning's show and Monday's show was incredible! That's it - from now on you and the team are part of my life every weekday morning - what a lucky sod I am!

Happy Birthday Bingo! Hope you are having a terrific day. xx

Haven't had a chance to catch up with yesterday's blog, but hope everyone is ok.

200 pages in a morning! In a car! (Sorry, but I've gone pale at the thought).

  • Comment number 23.

Dorset photo that comment made me giggle too and as I said on the previous blog, didn't much like the hello goodbye stuff but grinning and giggling like the eejit I am now.

I'm not housebound, on low income and I suppose technically a pensioner - so why am I sitting here working my socks off today?

Well done Christoph on getting through 200 pages - phew is all I can say, and well done of course.
Did you spot your stalker or weren't you in the car then? Must be scary having a big black van following you about ;o) (only joking Rips).

Agree Carl - MTF - tis illegal but there are programmes on t'net which let you do it. I haven't of course - wont find any such programme on my laptop - oh no ! (If you have re-activated fb - where are you then)?

All my parcels from my internet shopping day have just arrived. Wo hoo just off to open.

Good to see you back Somerset btw xx

    Hiya

Reading in the car - eeuuuwwww NO! Envy anyone who can. All I like to do in the car is sleep!! Mr Seza says he has had some very quiet journeys home especially the long journey from Devon!

MTF, If you buy an MP3 player ( and i have heard the poddy ones are very popular but haven't got one,) you can then buy a lickle gadget that you plug into the cigarette lighter. This then sends the signal from the MP3 to the radio and, voila, listenability in the car!!

School walk in the rain - yuck!

Beez - I joined the bloggers group yesterday. I haven't put my user name on there yet though....I like the thought of having a secret identity :-)

Seza, I don't know anything about a software package that records audio played in Internet Explorer and then allows you to save it in MP3 format. And neither will you, if the mods read this!

  • Comment number 32.

Hi Christoff, can't read, text or in fact do anythng other than watching what's ahead, yes that's sitting in the passenger seat! I fit into one of the categories, and it's not housebound or on low income. I have been awake at 7am and listening since Monday and will continue to do so for as long as you are there (or I am here!) I absolutely love it.

  • Comment number 33.

The Chris Evans show was best at "Drive Time" as it suited people who were out and about. Even children were accepted. Now the Breakfast slot has has lost its appeal to me for it lacks the arid humour of Sir Terry and the banter with the audience. Very childish- "Go, Johnny, Go" piece. Chris needs to take his time when speaking and not be so much in a hurry. Lynne has so much to offer as she has done in the past. Again the "Hello-goodbye piece at the end is so childish. Why does the show have to conform to a this format.

  • Comment number 34.

Me to I am not housebound, low income or pensioner just appreciate a good mix of music from all over the place.

As PJ Pied Piper said "Lovin It Lovin It Lovin It. I'm Lovin it like this".

Love the new show (pinching Mr Wrights phrase) and have noticed it toned down as the week goes on, here's to finding your groove Mr E.

My new routine is firmly established radio goes on at 7.00 and stays on for the rest of the day, until the drive time show I am afraid and then I turn it off. Sorry, you will have to get yourself cloned so we can have morning and evening entertainment from Mr Evans. Good work Team

I can't read in cars, but I can on planes and trains (although I do have to be sitting facing the way the train is going, can't sit backwards). I suffered from really bad travel sickness last year in the States, it was a very jerky bus - got off it two and a half hours later and threw up - nice! I'm glad I managed to hold on until the bus had stopped.

    LOL steering wheel/book.

I'm like Deev and mtd though too nosy to read on trains. Haven't done the plane thing for years - in fact I don't get out much - get locked in the cellar quite a bit...
    Feeling sorry for me yet?

Yes - all forms of transport! - they tend to knock me out now for long journeys! well that's their excuse anyway!! (by pills - not a thump!! :-)

Miles better thanks Thunder - just left with a bit of a cough and apparently a sexy voice!! Someone else said that to me on the phone today but I didn't get too excited - he's 79 ;o)

ashling - where do you get your pills - am I allowed to knock out hubby using a thump? so far it means we haven't been able to leave europe and I really want to see the world!

Still stuck in the office and for how long is anyones guess - still I have the day off tomorrow

  • Comment number 85.

Beez - correct. The touch doesn't work with some of the older iPod kit. In fact, I asked my OH to try mine in her speakers, because someone on Amazon reckons you'll get an electric shock. She wasn't keen, for some reason...

  • Comment number 86.

Beez, He probably keeled over withe the excitement!!

I had the same with a docking station. Really nice, remote control. I buy an ITouch and it stops working. Donated it to my daughter so at least someone is benefiting.

Just booked our family holiday week in October - had to book 2 houses cos there's so many of us - 7 adults, 3 little boys and 2 babies. Honest to goodness, I started off with 3 children and look what I've ended up with! Enough for 2 houses.

    We're off to Lake Windermere.

SB - I have a very understanding Doc - who prescribes the aforementioned pills - depending on the length of the journey depicts the amount - i.e took two to get to Cuba and Dominican - 1 for Europe - 2 large V&T for Ireland (same result!!) x

We're fans of Drivetime and are enjoying the breakfast show. My husband's particularly delighted he gets half an hour less of Sarah Kennedy!! Keep up the good work.

Hi Chris! As someone who never considered themself a TOGG, can I just say that the one criticism I have of your breakfast show is that you're too perky. I don't want to hear all that noise and commotion first thing in the morning. It doesn't wake me up or make me feel enthusiastic for the day ahead - it just makes me want to bury my head under the duvet!

  • Comment number 93.

OK - off home. Have to pick up my `surprise' birthday present to take home for my OH to wrap. Wonder what it could be....:-)

They would if they could beez, believe me! it's not so much I hate flying, its just apparently it's off putting to sit next to someone who has their face in a sick bag the whole time, especially when the trolley comes round. Can't think why? x

    Spot on Bids!!!

    But I love it. xxxxx

    Dear Chris,
Please do not think that I do not like you - I thought you were great on Jon Ross show and was looking forward to your new show. However, I am afraid like with many others, it does not suit you or us. From the sound of your voice you do not sound comfortable - it sounds false. Whereas on Drive Time you sounded comfortable as though you were enjoying it and it was a really good show. I think you would be happier back on your old slot and also to do the J Ross TV show on Fridays you would be fantastic - you are energetic, good visually, could be great with the musicians. This is not a personal slight - just think you are a round peg in a square hole. Would not want the public to blame you if the listening figures go down... it is not your fault. But when people wake up in the morning to face a hard day - especially in these hard times, they want to be coaxed into the world not HI de Hi campers shouted in their ears. Constructively, listen to Moira - when she reads the news she reads slow and it is gentle on the ears. Imagine yourself perhaps with a headache, hangover, had a row with the wife or boss, or having to face the job you hate in the morning to a shrill wacky sounding DJ - not you want TLC in the early morning. I hope you wont take offence to any of the above - I hope you will take note, but I don't suppose you want to take note.... You have been a good and successful broadcaster in the past and probably feel that what we as listeners say doesnt matter and that we are the minority - but I am not so sure. I wish you luck.

  • Comment number 99.

    I know I shouldn't bother replying but......

Sukimizu1, I really do not think listeners are in the minority. If listeners were in the minority, that would mean there were more presenters than listeners.

Also, if you bothered to read the blog that you have found on the computer and taken the time to sign into to leave your comment, you would see that our comments are being listened to.

As has been stated before, it takes all sorts and we are not all going to like the same thing

However, I've just been talking to my Mum, a life-long Radio 4 listener who has tuned into Chris this week because she knows I like his shows and even she has said that she has enjoyed it and will listen again

So, for every person who decides Chris Evans is not who they want to listen to in the mornings and switches him off, I think there will be others who switch him on!

Hi gang, hope you're all ok. Curry has been consumed and am now consuming choc for pud!

CLP when are you appearing on the Book Club prog? I saw a trailer for it and am looking forward to seeing it as I like my books. I don't get as much time to read as much nowadays but I was a voracious reader when I was little! Have just finished the last Phillipa Gregory (The White Queen) which I loved, and am just starting the second of the Millenium trillogy by Steig Larsson, again v v good.

Glad you're settling into the Breakfast slot, I think we're all begining to get used to hearing a new voice in the mornings, and adjusting our routines to suit!

Annie your holiday sounds lovely, am planning my birthday weekend at the moment but nothing booked just yet!

Chezza I have one word to say to you.... Hamleys!!!!!

Hope you've all had a good day, and have survived what's left of the snow. We just had slushy, sleety, rain today here in Edinburgh
