With a name like that...

Chris Evans | 13:02 UK time, Tuesday, 13 January 2009

How about this for a name...

... Piers Maserati. Pretty impressive, eh?

And yes, he is a racing driver. Former GT champ, by the way.

He had to be a racing driver with a name like that. His mum and dad named him that because they wanted him to be a racing driver, in the cockpit and off in a cloud of dust just as soon as his little arms and legs would allow him.

He's gonna teach me to drive around a race track REALLY fast. That's the new box to tick for the first of '09. Tash is gonna do it as well. It's the smart move.

Once worked with a guy called Rick Zarko, real name. He was a guitarist in a band. Had to be. Know any people with cool real names?

What with our bump almost baked and ready to drop at any mo, names are, of course, at the top of our agenda.

We are still convinced it is going to be a little boy babba and have only chosen the one nom. It's been the same nom from the off, we haven't changed it or even been tempted to err once.

He will also have two middle names. If it does turn out to be a little girl we thought maybe Emma-not-a-son-Fittipaldi (Evans). Wonder what she would end up doing?

Loving the book theme. I feel this year is a year for reading, it's inexpensive, it's educational, it's peaceful, it's positive and it's really cool.

Back to old Will Shugsper (just one of the seventy odd ways he spelt his name), you know if a word he wanted to use didn't exist he just made it up!

This, my friends, is the way forward. I was writing something earlier today and I very much wanted to utilise the word unfulfillment but guess what, It doesn't exist. Well it blimmin' well should (nor' by the way does the word blimmin' !!!) It's the opposite obviously of fulfillment.

So, do I stick it in there and risk being considered illiterate, or do I take the sting out of what I really want to say and use another word which I really don't want to ?

Ah the dilemmas of the DJ

CLP.

2009.

X.

P.S. All good chat about my friend yesterday, thanks for that.

Naming your child is one of the most important things in the world. Please remember that they have to live with that name for the rest of their life.

    Morning/Afternoon everyone,

One of the best names I heard was the rugby player Austin Healey......

  • Comment number 5.

    Use it Christoff.

Yous'll be Unfulfilled if you don't.

I'm all for talkin' nonsense. Anyway I've never bin' told what I can't do in me life and I'm buggered if I'm going to use Sat-Nav or Spellcheck and let me car or computer do it now.

If rules weren't made to be broken, there'd be no such thing as design.

And. As the DDF Eric used to say.

The chap who never made any mistakes never made ANYthing.

And Tanksamillion chaps. Yes I'm going to do it. I just read that missive back and apart from thinking how up meself I sounded, I thought What A wimp. You're a long time deed.

    Afternoon Christophe Lovely Pies!

Names. I was almost a Samantha. But my middle name has got 2 A's in it, as had my maiden name, so thankfully mum and dad changed me to a Cheryl or else A would have featured in pretty much every other letter of my name. Til I met The One and changed it, that is!

On the racing theme - did you hear the news that the Moto GP is moving to Silverstone as of 2010. I'm gutted!!! Our annual trip to Donington is one of the best weekends of the year. It took a while to find the prefect B and B and to suss out the local pubs etc, now it's all change! Granted, Silverstone is nearer to home than Donington but it just won't be the blimmin' same!!! Grrrrrrrrrr.

AND just because F1 snore-athon has moved to Donington, there's a 100K refurb for the track and its facilities.

    Grrrrrrrrr again!

Loving the reading, and the notion of making up words. I'm sure as you read the blog every day new words just spring off your screen ......

    Fantabulous!
    Divalicious!

    Chezza la Diva xxx

PS: we can call him Nathan, if he's a boy ...

  • Comment number 7.

I have a family member called Joan Jones - she married into it!

Possible names for future children include Hope and Kathryn for a girl and Jacob or Daniel for a boy - with old fashioned names ourselves we would like something with a bit of a kick to it!

Names I would love but are not allowed inc. Dante/Zacharias and lemuel.

    Super bpx

The BEST (IMO!) film character name has to be Tom Cruise's racing driver character in Days Of Thunder ......

    Cole Trickle

    Classico!!

  • Comment number 9.

    Also.

At the risk of outing the GD, we named her after summat you normally reserve for the family parrot. But as it's short (?) for Mary, that's what she's registered as. Ergo we have had endless fun with her as she tries to explain this conundrum at school, the bank, passport office and so on, not to mention the fancy-dress potential.

Just be mindful of the surname though. As one of the saddos with a TOG name, you really don't want to be called Ivor Corker or Alf Hart, or be excluded from a career as a Heart Surgeon in Ireland just because your name is Angie O'Plasty.

Right am off. HAVE to get me packin' done.

Hmmm good point. Wonder if anyone at work has the surname 'Baker'. Out of 450 staff there must be one surely.

I'm just getting back into reading myself. Finished one last night, need to pick out another one from the pile.

Dook, in answer to your post on previous blog by the way. Nope that advert was about his brother Johnathon. And yep the best crumpets.

Well, here goes ... have been lurking for a while getting to know you all! bit scary really, first blog and all ...!
Anyway, names ... my big thing is to make sure the initials don't spell anything weird! very important!!
My dad used to teach someone called Russell Sprout (honestly, it's true!) - so i guess testing possible name out loud is also a good idea!!
Hope did ok for first try!!

  • Comment number 12.

One has to worry about initials as well. For example, Irene Paula Quick..... I.P. Quick......

  • Comment number 13.

Naming your child is one of the biggest challenges life has to offer IMO!

Avoiding unfortunate short forms/mixes with your surname/initials etc etc............not picking the same name as everyone else whose kids will be in their future school class..........yet not picking something completely weird and bullying-inducing unless the child is strong enough to handle it (and how would you know?)

I find people who just give the child their own name sad and lacking in imagination but maybe they just gave up the battle?

We're still quite happy with all our kids names and they don't seem to mind them, altho' one always just uses the short form of his, but when I think of some of the options that were considered they had lucky escapes!

Good luck Chris and Tash. At least Evans is a fairly innocuous surname to start from.

Mind you - I'd have said that about Green too until my Mum had a friend called Theresa Green (I kid you not!).

Hello Cornishgirlie...... welcome to the gates of oblivion...

  • Comment number 20.

    Thanks for the welcome!
a school friend of mine had initials L C and despaired throughout her school life of always being called Elsie which she hated! so you see how important those initials can be ...!

  • Comment number 21.

Welcome Cornishgirlie, I'm quite new myself and have been made to feel very welcome.

I had a friend who's initials spelt C.O.W!! Also my brother knew somebody called Hope who married Mr Hope! What are the chances of that happening.

I am eternally grateful to my parents for giving me a normal name, although they hate it that everyone shortens it!! Ho Hum, they can't have everything.

    Oh dear!

My fella is named for his father and it does get confusing!

  • Comment number 25.

    Debbie - precisely!

My own immediate family didn't do it thank goodness, but going further back in time every George had a son George, every William had a son William etc - and then they both used their brothers' names too - so all the cousins had the same ones! Makes unravelling the family history (very topical issue today) a nightmare!

I see Charlotte Church has gone for Dexter - not my personal preference but at least it isn't the ubiquitous Jack! Nice enough name but there must be millions of them aged under 15 by now!!

  • Comment number 26.

one of the name i like is Tata Young , how about my name

  • Comment number 27.

Hiya cornishgirlie, welcome to the mad hatter's tea party!

Lost my train of thought now, the monkey did a giant snoooore right down my ear.

    Hmmm.

Oh yes, books! I've read one of BB's travel books, I think it was an australia one - brilliant. Can't understand why I've not read any more! Nor can I understand why I've suddenly become a sucker for Slummy Mummy and Domestic Diva type rom-com books, never really used to be my thing.

Naming our little one was tricky. But we've managed to call him a good old fashioned name which is still fairly (but not too) common. And of course we had to keep his middle name a traditional one - his great-grandad and grandad's first name, and his dad's middle name. Wonder if he'll carry on the tradition. He was nearly a Charlie, after my grandad, but Benjamin John won out :)

I always used to hate my surname, just because I couldn't imagine being famous with a name like that! Now my name's changed and nobody can spell it. Nothing worse than spelling out your surname to somebody and them assuming you must've spelt it wrong...

Shouldn't have opened that bag of lindt mini egg chocolate truffle things....

Debbie - little ronnie - my dad-in-law was referred to as "the lad" even after he got married, as he and his dad shared the same name. The name lives on but I think your name is so important, it defines you, that I agree, you should have a name of your own :)

  • Comment number 29.

For some reason on my Father's side all the men have the middle name David, no idea why!!

A lady I know has five sons who's names all start with the letter A. Must have been a nightmare when they started to get post.

  • Comment number 30.

Dexter makes me think of that US tv show about a serial killer ....

that's the other problem, isn't it. You think of a name and then someone reminds you of someone called that at school or in past life who was a bit of a ..... and it puts you off the name you chose.

Hard enuff naming pets, let alone babies!

My full initials are CPT and at a former job my email was cpt@ ...... so my best friend subsenquently named me The Captain, coz every time I emailed her from work that's what it looked like in her Inbox!

  • Comment number 31.

What about George Foreman calling all his sons George...... Not sure how many he has, but took about confusing........

  • Comment number 32.

The same care should be taken when naming children as naming pets. Think of a name then go to your back door and shout the name (in full!) - and if you feel silly, embarrassed, or if curtains twitch - go for another one!

  • Comment number 33.

Talking of ancestors, my mum did a lot of research and was freqiuently stumped by masses of George, James, Charles and Williams. I think that was the sum total of the names used for 3 generations of boys in our family...

  • Comment number 34.

Dook - that made me laugh out loud, but what a sensible idea xx

  • Comment number 35.

Naming your child what a nice problem to have. The old ones are the best I think.

    Ashfaq, Nameste

Sorry my blog to Clodagh and Hazel is on the other blog.

  • Comment number 36.

course in Cornwall there is that thing of using your middle name instead of your first name! so i everytime you go to the Drs or somewhere they call out your name and you ignore it cos it isnt' you! (or maybe it's just my family who do that!!)

  • Comment number 37.

Here there is a tendency to automatically abbreviate someone's name. James becomes Jim whether you go by Jim or not. It's a battle I go through almost daily asking people not to abbreviate my name. Although it's a good indication on how well someone knows me.

  • Comment number 38.

007 - you don't seem like a Jim to me - definitely a James. It's like Mr Diva - nobody 'cept his mum calls him David. He's a Dave. End of!

  • Comment number 39.

Cheryl's right - without specifying them in case I offend someone on here there are some names I hate just because I once knew a bullying or bitchy woman called them - or a rotten man for that matter!

And abbreviations - yes - people who presume to shorten my real name without asking if I mind don't get a warm reception.

And I think jumpy and I must be related............LOL

  • Comment number 42.

derbyfi, I make a point of thanking people when they ask me if I go by Jim or James. It happens once in a while. I hate it when I call myself James, and people then call me Jim.... hello, weren't you LISTENING!!!!!! Just a pet peeve of mine in case you didn't guess.....LOL

    hmmmmm interesting thought Alibaba.

  • Comment number 46.

    Morning/afternoon all!

Have been lurking for a bit but thought I'd add my twopence worth.

I think its really important to consider what the name you give a child rhymes with as well. Kids love rhyming nasty things with names in the playground.... I wont add examples for fear of offending!

I don't really get people who call their kids the same as their last name eg Robin Robinson..... So please CLP if baby DJ is boy don't call him Evan!

My name also gets shortened, some are acceptable and some are really not. Weirdly my name also has been shortened and then that shortening lengthened to something else - which happened to be a multi-legged insect. Not nice, and my mother is the only one allowed to get away with it!

James, I must confess that I am awful at remembering names but I do try not to abridge them without permission! Hope you don't mind it when I call you Bondy tho'..................?

Ali has a good point too - hadn't thought of that one!

Like cornishgirlie my Dad has always been known by his middle name and he hates his first one so often ignores it when it is used! When he went into hospital years ago he got sick of telling the staff what his 'real' name was and finally asked the most junior nurse to amend the sign above his bed - which she did. It's a basic courtesy IMO to address someone who is sick with their preferred name.

My abridged comments on recent things below...if anyone is bored please look away now...could well send you to sleep!

Names: i have a simple first name but without an i in..and my maiden name was a nightmare, hence keeping my married name post divorce..and some say it suits!
As for CtD comment about Mr Hunt...well i know someone with the same surname who changed his first name at 16 cos his parents christened him Mark..only thing that couldve been worse was Mike! It really is a Simpsons sketch!
Oh, and know someone who has given their child the initials A.S.S.. really! Anyway, im sure a suitable name will be chosen for bubba evans... we are all excited to find out im sure!

Books: BB is amazing..dont read got anywhere confined tho cos laughing out loud seems guaranteed... think ive read most of his and the Shakespeare one appeared at Christmas..may start it tomorrow now!

Tattoos: have been saying for years gonna do it..and GM is gonna take me when we`re off in April.. and he is adding to his collection of (subtle) three.. this is the man who hates needles but will happily let them ink him.. odd! But quite excited..and just have to find a design now!

Friends: Having a good friend who is always honest is a must i think..but hard situation. Unfortunately i tend to call a spade a spade and give my opinions..and my true friends appreciate it i hope..

Singledom: have been there and loved it..but am happily settled now and wouldnt change it for the world. And when i first met GM i wasnt actively looking for a relationship despite how we met..but it just happened and we clicked.. sometimes these things happen when we least expect.. happy 09 for the single ones of us out there..

hazel - can you not hide it somewhere? Today we are only doing journals for under 100 usd - anything smaller then that is too small to worry about!

Hehe Lyndyloo - that reminded me of one of the engineers / technicians at Mr Jumpy's old work, called Andy Fiddler - A Fiddler. An engineer. Perfect! Mr Jumpy ought to have been called Fiddler, he fiddles with everything. Or Tinker. Knew a girl with the initials A Tinker, wonder what she's doing these days.

SBeep, unfortunately not. 'Someone' has been giving themselves cash advances and not writing them down...and I haven't got receipts...thank you for your suggestion all the same, but we aren't a big enough organisation...having said that, it it possible that one of the lads may have purchased some equipment...will have to quiz them at length under a warm light bulb.

This is when you really need a name...although I have a rough idea of the two who it may be...and it's not a problem...just verra verra naughty...

...anne frankely I think I'm gonna knock it sur le bonce as it's doing my head in...

    Bees, indeed we are!

Oooh CLP, there's a big decision. What if baby doesn't look like his name when he comes out? Is there room for manoeuvre?

Hello there all you lovely lovely people!

Not reading BB, not sure if I fancy it. But have just got an email from the book store that starts with W to say that Maureen Lipman's book is winging it's way to me :-) Am reading Julie Walters autobiography right now - good, but not as many laughs as I thought...

Clodagh, I missed it, what are you doing?

SuperBP, always wondered how to pronounce Lemuel (it's a lovely name). I mean, is it LEMuel, or LeMUel, or even LemYOOel?

Hello cornishgirlie! My initials used to be LC too, which led my best friend's dad to call me Elsie for years.

James, my mum and dad gave me my name with the belief that it couldn't be shortened (being only four letters). How wrong they were!

Dragon #46, I do know an Evangelos Evangelinos!

Ah, Beesmum, is what I thought was your first name not your first name then?

Glad everyone's in tippety toppety form (where is Jovial these days - have you locked him away Beesmum?).

Naming kids can be a nightmare, with a surname Walker we avoided names beginning with J, as they'd get Mr/Miss J Walker (jaywalker). We joked around with our first with the name Luke Skye, settled with Victoria pretty early on in the pregnancy, she is now 9 years old, were on earth has all the time gone. She also has two middle names, Victoria Elizabeth Anne (three Queens)

Racing drivers, let me guess we are going to get a Mansell or Hamilton Evans. Good luck with the birth etc.

Books books books, thats one thing having kids does, I used to have loads of time when I was a young'un to read and read. With having kids its a case of not having the time.

Hiya Flower - no my first name is not my first name - ever complicated me.
My hairdresser has your name and woe betide anyone who shortens it!!
Don't worry about Jovial - he is safe in my cupboard getting over man flu!!!!

I must ask my Mum one day why her and Dad named me Deborah.

They have always called me Debbie.

I am hardly ever called Deborah. Unless I've been naughty that is ;-)
