My Grandad was a pipe smoker - only outside though - the smell of it reminds me of him!

I too am gawjus, altho 5'7" so not exactly short!

My grandad used to smoke a pipe too, and yes, very fragrant, altho not so sure it did my developing lungs any good when I was left with them for the weekend as a child!

I may get modified for this, but I actually like the smell of "hemp" cigarettes (!!). Tried it once. Violently ill. Never again. At least I know what I'm missing!

Smoking shops are a dying breed tho, which is sad as there are still baccy conoisseurs out there. Each to their own. Just as long as they don't do it in a restaurant while I'm eating!

Smoke free pubs are good now too, but I think it daft when rock stars are fined by the local council for smoking on stage - what's a 250 squid fine to the likes of Slash, Keef Richards and Paul Weller?

Busy v.v. busy since yesterday am - tried to catch up on all blogs since then but way too much - gave up. So to the above..............

My Dad and Granddad both smoked pipes but one gave up decades ago and the other is no longer with us, so now although I don't much like the smell, on the odd times I do get a whiff of a pipe it does stir up lots of memories for me too.

I don't like ciggy smoke at all though! Sorry to those on here who like a puff - but being on the blog means you can do it and I don't have to share it!

When I was very young, my dad smoked a pipe - I loved the smell of it. But he gave it up because he could really feel it affecting his lungs ..... and went on to cigarettes instead - clever or what?!

When I was in my 20's I went through a stage where I was a "social smoker" but MrS absolutely hated it and I reluctantly stopped. I was livid with him at the time, but I now know he did me a big favour - no doubt I would have spent the last 25 years trying to give up!

Hope you all had a good Christmas/New Year. Bit late I know, but there you are. I have been lurking.

Cheryl, as soon as a date is organised, please post it up here and I certainly will try and make it. Only one hour journey on the train to London. I am very much a "lurker" because I don't usually get to read the blog until in the morning, and by then it's usually yesterday's blog/news.

And you know what? Chris played my ARF on Friday 15th December, "Rockin' All Over the World" and never mentioned me! Typical!

In answer to your question Christoph - Mr Beesmum smokes a pipe!
He fills the house with smoke and turns everything yellow but it does smell nicer than ciggy smoke.
and you wouldn't want to talk to him cos he's a grumpy git at the moment!!!
and yes v difficult to get his baccy - we're in Midlands and he gets via courier from Leeds!!! old fashioned tobacco shops are as rare as hens teeth!

Morning all - well afternoon now! Grandad Egg apparently used to smoke cigarettes (before my time!) and then moved onto cigars, then about 10 years ago stated one Christmas "after i have finished the Cigars I got for Christmas I'm stopping!" and duly on the 1st of January he did and hasn't had another since. I still adore the smell of King Edwards and Hamlets. The best bit is that King Edwards used to come in large hinged boxes, and when dad finished a box I got it to keep my bits 'n' pieces in, so some where in the loft I know there is a box with some crap in it that still smells wonderful.

Morning all,

Did anyone have a Grandad who didn't smoke.
Mine had four pipes and used them all.
He had different pipes for different destinations, I can still hear the popping sound it used to make when he baged it on on the palm of his hand to clear it out before resting it on the the magnificent four pipe balsa wood stand that I made for him in the shed!

Pipe smoking Grandads also made Christmas and Birthdays easy..pack of filters, new pen knife for scraping it out or every one club together to buy a new Ash tray, so big it needed a table of its own...Blimey, I'm all misty eyed...mind you I was then aswell, all that smoke!

I'l have another go with this for an ARF request....

Wish i'd seen yesterdays blog, I think i'm the only airline employee here at good old Heathrow that doesn't actually agree with the 3rd Runway. Mind you my main issue is what will happen when that fills up, do we demolish another part of West London to fit another one in?

Anyway, pipe smoke, had a bloke at school who smoked a pipe and I always thought it was a bit weird for a 17yr old to be doing that. Great smell though!....the pipe smoke, not my spotty 17yr old mate in the '80s.

...well I smoke cigs, and my Great Uncle Len used to smoke a pipe...as far as I remember was relatively cuddly...although surrounded by a blue haze at all times was a bit hit and miss in the arm chair, my Gran'ma let me smoke a seegar when I was five, and I like the odd puff of a fat Havana these days...although my group of friends tend to buy one expensive cigar to share between us...and my Stepfather used to say that once you'd smoked a pipe, your eyebrows would never come back down to their original position...

Haven't seen anyone smoke a pipe for years. Not with just baccy in it anyway, but that's not for here, and I CANNOT ABIDE that malarkey so there.

my dad used to smoke a pipe for years - but often used to just sit there chewing it rather than lighting it! i think it was a bit of a comfort blanket thing!! i did like the smell though - and years later i worked for someone who smoked a pipe in the office and it always made me feel at home!!

My grandad used to smoke roll ups and he used to give me his empty tins to put my dinner money in.

There is something nice about the smell of an empty tobacco tin. Strange.

What am I like? Just driving around the M25 and between Junction 25 and 25 the traffic suddenly slowed right down. Could see that a lorry had stopped with hazards on in the slow lane.

As drove past realised that in front of the lorry was a swan. Just wandering along in front of it, unaware of the danger it was in. So next, me in tears. What's all that about? Hope that someone gets to the swan in time. And how totally brilliant of that lorry driver to sit in front of it.

I don't think either of my Grandfathers smoked a pipe, but I do like the smell. Much prefer the smell of cigars and pipes to ciggies. I love it when you go out to a pub now that you don't come home stinking of fags!! Not that I have anything against people smoking each to their own vice.

Debbie: I hope the swan makes it. How lovely of that driver to be so caring. A few years ago, we had a family of a mum duck and her seven ducklings in the wee estate we lived in. She paraded them through the streets and then headed off to try to get them to water. I phoned the RSPB to see if we could do anything, but they said, no. And then proceeded to say the magpies would probably get the ducklings! I do think about them often - did they make it??!!!

Hi Chrissie. With my Mum and Dad being in the animal welfare line of things, I hear some sad stories regarding certain organisations that don't always respond to calls.

My Dad has rescued mum ducks and ducklings doing exactly what you described.

Thought of Bingo when I saw that lorry parked on the motorway.

Hope that the swan is ok. They can't take off from dry land you see, so someone would have to go pick it up.

I'm a new blogger :) Love the show, on the way home every day! I always remember having a toy pipe in red and yellow and had it clamped between my teeth walking around on the farm 'puffing away'!! Remember many members of teh farming community could be located below major clouds of smoke. The smell always takes me back.

Afternoon each!

Pipes..loved the smell..my old Grandpa (who died when i was only 3) had one..and it still takes me back to collecting eggs from the bottom of his garden whenever i smell one... Bees, can i borrow Mr Bees for the weekend please ..for nostalgia purposes only of course!

And up here in the wilderness of my town (that is currently the hot topic in the news it seems..and not in a good way unfortunately..)..we have a traditional old tobacconists that just keeps going and going..anyone want a lighter shaped like an elephant or about 50 different shaped pipes..not to mention walking sticks (random but hey!) then i know just the place. And long shall it stay i hope.

Day off yesterday and had every intention of catching up..but car for service (boo), mums for lunch (yay) and then shopping (more yay!) took over.. i WILL try harder i promise..cos i miss yas!

Anyhoo...welcome to al the newbies.. belated happy birthday to Mr B Starr and hugs to anyone else feeling under the weather/down and just generally needing one...

I think like most I had a grandfather that smoked a pipe. He lived until the ripe old age of 96......

I warn you, you'll need some hankies..... but, given that TWO women died of the same illness that killed Jessica Palmer around Christmas, this is too important to ignore. If by passing the word around we can prevent another Mummy dying, and leaving other children and their daddies bereft, then it'll be worth it.

Did we ever see pipe smokers getting their 'thrills' in the public domain pre the smoking ban? Well of course we all did but it was a rare occasion, one which I agree would usually result in someone commenting on how much they like the smell and that it reminded them of years past.....usually a Granddad sat in his rocking chair whilst betting on the horses.
Even when smoking was considered 'fair game' in public places pipe smoker seemed a breed all to themselves keeping themselves to themselves, perhaps the saying Pipe and Slippers really is just how it is? A comfy cosy relaxed sporting pleasure rather than a quick fix between appointments. It lives on me thinks, however behind closed doors where it is given the time and dedication and appreciation it requires.

scoobs -we used to "do" CSI but gave up as there were so many different seasons spread across different networks it got confusing.

i love the way they resolve the most grissly of murders in 47 minutes tho! puts our plod to shame (sorry ginge!)

I used to love Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope (remember Dr Billy Kronk - a young Eric Mabius (Daniel) from Ugly Betty) and grew up on my weekly fix of Dynasty and Dallas.

I'm going to watch this series of Dexter the first one was brilliant. Very dark and very clever.

Otherwise I'm not a big fan of US shows.

Btw: I know that the 'hug' bit gets on somes nerves. But could I just have a couple. Just to keep me going :-(

I went to school with a guy that started to smoke a pipe when he was about 18, he was known as Noj as his name was Jon and he was dyslexic. He used to smoke cherry tobbacco which smelt divine!!!! He also had chocolate tobbacco and all sorts of other smells all wonderful though.

CLP - The smoking of pipes. In Ukraine they ave in most restaurants the smoking of 'uge pipes bit like yer might see in Morocco, it's called 'Coupa' or something like that maybe 'Cooupka' forgotten what exactly me translater said it's called but something like that.
But it's noot tabacco. NYET!!!!! (NO)
Yer can get fruit flavours, almost like 'erbal tea type of thing. And when yer sitting nearby it fills the air with smoke.

Hello to all newbies, oldies and sporadics like myself. Echo akacrumpy about finding time and free computer to keep up with the blog a ce moment.

My Dad smoked a pipe occasionally for years, but he gave all tobacco up eventually. I loved the smell too. In fact, for a time, pipe/tobacco-related gifts for Christmas/birthdays/Fathers' Day were my Dad's socks or soap-on-a-rope equivalent. Pipe rack, tins of tobacco, five Hamlets, pipe-cleaning kits. Pipes, obviously.

After he gave up he had to make do with chocolate brazils and the latest book about cricket. Neither of which smell as good.

For Christmas I got the "Jackie Magazine" CD - it's all 70s pop music. The thing is, even though technically I can appreciate how awful much of it sounds today, lots of it was the soundtrack to my life aged 6 - 14, and as I was mad about music from a very youg age I can remember it all like yesterday. I love warbling along in the car. Anyway, because I'd forgotten this song ever existed and am currently belting it out daily, I would
like the following:

I have to stay quiet when The Hair is watching such tellybox gems as Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Gallactica etc etc etc blur blur blur.

When I get the lappylaptop out and start chatting to yous lot on here, or over on FaceCloth, I get The Evils as I tippytap away on the keyboard!! Now tho, thanks to the miracle of wireless broadband I can chat to yous lot from the comfort of my duvet!
