DO THAT BLOG QUICKLY !

Chris Evans | 14:53 UK time, Monday, 1 December 2008

I'm not quite sure they realise...

...do they blog fans ?

This little daily missive may not be the floweriest excerpts of writing but it deserves a bit more due than...

"Do that blog quickly !"

I wouldn't mind but I'm not in late and have been here for most of the day anyway, after taking my daughter and her mum to see the Take That special this morning.

Technically, according to my normal schedule, I still have 29 minutes left to write today's words.

Alright so, I admit, we have a lot on our collective plates today as Christmas kicks in big time on drivetime tonight.

After Womans' Minute every day between now and Crimble we are playing Christmas singles, that is songs you received as your first ever single at Christmas, not songs necessarily about Christmas... tonight we kick off with mine...from 1972....Chuck Berry's - My Ding-a-ling, I must have played it fifty times a day for at least a year.

So come on then... all week, we need yours and no fibbing.

You must have received this song at Christmas, on vinyl, in your pillow case, or sack or whatever it was Santa used to fill for you and it must have been your first record EVER!

We were going to ease Christmas in steadily over the next week but then we thought, what the heck, John Lewis don't decorate one floor at a time do they?

So, we are officially full on, cooking on Christams gas from five tonight until the big man, himself shows up on the 25th.

By the way Take That were very endearing this morning, a lot of the stuff that didn't get aired was hilarious and heart warming, some of it will be on the web tomorrow.

Other than that, loads more going on, however I feel I must move swiftly in to the music meeting and leave a longer chat until tomoz.

CLP.

    First Xmas song I received was Rolf Harris and 2 little boys had 2 little toys and on the B side was The Ladies of the Harem of the Court of Kung Caraticus Can pretty much remeber all of it still.

    Great record both sides. Still get chills listening to 2 little boys.

    I'm pretty sure that my first ever CD single i got bought was Sure by Take that.

    Debs - That is SUCH amazing news!!! The most mahoosive weight lifted from shoulders i should imagine? In may this year i was in exactly the same position, just offered a job i really needed and floating on cloud 9. I'm so happy for you!! xXx

    Looks like you are Girlracer!

    The first music that I got - all for me was at XMAS '87 - the infamous NOW 10 - it came complete with my own wee boogie box.

    Barcelona - Freddy Mercury
    Sweet Little Mystery - Wet Wet Wet
    Or to keep with the Xmas Theme........

    Fairy tale of New York - Pogues & Kirsty McColl

    Cheers Chris - hope you had a nice holibob

    Hehe, CB you bring back good memories of being in a gay club in Blackpool and seeing the dancefloor filled with rather camp men all doing the dance for The Ladies of the Harem...

    Christmas singles? Or rather singles for Christmas - mine was Only You by the Flying Pickets, I think. Loved it, played it to death. Still like it :-)

    ps CLP, welcome back!!! We have missed you soooooo much.

    The first single I ever got as a christmas present was West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys, but the first single I had ever was - oh this is embarrassing - 'Ello John, Got a new Motor by Alexi Sayle.

    thing was, I had won a fancy dress party at school and the prize was a record token - I had never bought a record before and didn't really know what I was doing. Honest!

    MW, a!

    Good luck with the interviews AF.....

    Oh hurrah Christoff welcome back and marvellous re. the Christmas songs.

    As it happens my first-ever record that I bought as an ickle tadpole, used to drive the DDF Eric up the wall with it on repeat on me little red Dansette, was "Lonely Pup" by Adam Faith.

    Happy Days. In the days when I was the first in our street to have a trouser suit, used to leg it to the corner shop for a packet of Spangles and if I'd told me mother Renee I was bloggin' I'd have had a crack round the back of me ear and me mouth washed out with Swarfega.

    first single i bought - i would do anything for love - but i won't do that - meatloaf - first single I really notcied was either star treckin' the firm or reet petitie by someone - mainly becuase the music videos were so good

  • Comment number 19.

    Welcome back Chris, we missed you!

    The first single I got bought for me at Christmas was, and for once I do apologise, "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" by Little Jimmy Osmond. I don't think I even liked it that much then.

    Crumbs (has anyone used that one yet?)Debbie, I am so delighted you got the job. Want to see a photo of you in your overall and hairnet very soon. What are the hours? I bet you'll have a ball with all those Pilsbury Doughman type bakers. Mind, you'll have to watch you don't turn into a Pilsbury doughgirl with all that bread around!

    Whens the big opening of the Advent calender?

    Hurrah! It's Advent, Debs has a job and there are NO MORE NEXT BUTTONS!

    PS And good luck to you, AF

  • Comment number 20.

    Phew, found you all!

    My first record was Ravel's Bolero. I was really disappointed - I got a really funky record player for Xmas when I was about 9 and the only record I was given was Ravel's chuffing Bolero.

    Two little boys - I LOVE that song!!

    Diva, I was thinking that ... daughter and her mum ... hmmmmmmmm, was that a slip???

    Anyway, off to take more medication so I shall wish you all a good night. And one last time, good luck Debs for tomorrow

    I guess my "Christmas" single would have to be Young Guns (Go For It) by Wham!

    I had the 12" single version and was utterly in love with Wham!'s guitarist, David Austin.

    1982, I believe.

    Ah boleyngirl, you aren't allowed out of the site with your uniform on. And they send it off for cleaning.

    It's a rather fetching blue outfit, seems wierd doing an admin based job in a uniform but I know some of the technical stuff will be 'hands on'.

    Hours are 9.30am to 1.30pm, three days a week. And they are very flexible when it comes to childcare problems etc, you can swap days and hours.

    Sounds good to me.

    On the Christmas theme, Renee has just reminded me of a lovely tale regarding when the DDF Eric was a small boy.

    The youngest of a brood, Eric had tried hard to be asleep by the time Father Christmas (the old War Hero Granddad) crept down the chimmeney and into his room with his sack of tangerines, a penny whistle and other miscellaneous sh**e that today's ankle-biters would contact Childline over. Therefore once all was quiet on the Western Front, up he went. All of a sudden, all Hell let loose and Eric's roaring nearly brought the roof in. Grandma shot straight upstairs to see all the kids up and surrounding a red-faced and nasty-tempered Father Christmas. "Eric!" says Grandma. "What've I told you? You're supposed to be asleep when Father Christmas comes in or you won't get any presents."

    "I WAS," wailed Eric. "But he stood on me bloody hand."

    What a hero.

  • Comment number 30.

    first single I bought was 'Green Onions' Booker T & the MG's and the first LP was 'White Feathers' by Kajagoogoo

    I think the first LP I unwrapped at Chrimbo was either
    Kings of the Wild Frontier by Adam and the Ants
    or
    NOW 1, (which was just called 'Now that's what I call music')

    MrsW's was the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack, which also happens to be my most disliked movie ever!!!

    In response to what was the first single/LP i got for Xmas i'm not sure but it would have been either The Clash, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers or The Stranglers . . or somesuch other similar group. I reckon most people on here or indeed that know me in R/L would have said they could have guessed.

    Debbie - Congralutions! Well done!

    My first single was "You just might see me cry" by Our Kid!

    Chris - My ding a ling was my party piece song, I remember singing it at my Mum and Dad's Silver Wedding Anniversary! ;o))

    Cheryl - Sorry I couldn't join in the guessing game today, can I copy Dragon and get my guess for tomorrow in early? I think it will be a wee christmas tree.

    That guy from John Lewis had no idea what he was talking about. The reduction in VAT from 17.5% to 15% means that a Product previously priced at £100 will now cost £97.87 - a reduction of £2.12 (*NOT* £2.50). No wonder our economy is in such dire straights if the Directors of large retail institutions such as John Lewis have no understanding of basic maths!

    Chris, so fantastic to have you back. I have had a day off work today, and have managed to hear the whole show - this never happens! Wonderful show, but I am not Christmassy yet .... but I'll get there!

    Think I have managed to catch up with the blog over the weekend and today - really hard work, but very worthwhile!

    Debbie: you have been through so much recently. Very difficult with your teenager, but I am completely with Clodagh on this, great advice. Yes, he made a (big) mistake but honestly, encouragement and love is the way to go. He's struggling just now, but you and Mr Debbie will be there for him, and that's all he needs.

    Also Debbie: how fantastic about your new job! You must be absolutely over the moon! I will try to pop in later to join you with a wee glass of something, when MsS has vacated the computer and I can get a look in!

    Just to say, I really had the most wonderful weekend - Jersey Boys is an incredible show - I've never attended any show where the standing ovations take place DURING the show!

    I'm glad I managed to enjoy myself, I have come home to discover the car is in the garage for new brake lining-things, approximately £600 - just what we need!

    And yay - Bingo on sally traffic!!

    Lynyloo - I saw thw Rat Pack Christmas Show 2 years ago and the "regular" Rat Pack show in October this year - both absolutely superb!

    Now, I've relayed the tale of the Advent Calendar to Mr Diva and he can see my plight and that mouses doing things with things for the next 23 days may be a tad tedious ....

    so, he has said I can use our Advent Calendar for the bloggers - it does look more traditional and has Santa on the front of it. Today's window was a jack-in-the-box.

    All happy with that?

    oops. i got moderated for my first effort of the Darkness song!!!

  • Comment number 76.

    Nice one SBP.

    First single, for Christmas. I was 9. Crazy Little Thing Called Love. And, the best bit of all? I still have it in a box in the loft.

    Must go and dig it out......

    This must already be going down as the weirdest Christmas I have ever known.

    Normally I am about as far from 'the spirit' on the first of December as you can be, you know, not wishing to peak too early and all that, but this year I am right on it. The show today helped that feeling along quite nicely too. Is it something to do with all the doom and gloom around that we are all reaching out for something to smile about and Christmas is there, being handed to us on a plate?

    But this really is a Christmas of contrast.

    We felt it inappropriate to have a do at work as people have been laid off and we thought that having a bash with their former colleagues wasn't the right thing to do, so we canned it. And yet we are off to Mrs MfR's company do on Saturday, a black tie affair celebrating the massive project they are currently working on.

    The shops are full of people, whether or not they are buying anything remains to be seen, and yet shops and businesses are going to the wall left right and centre.

    All very, very strange.

    Still. Good to see one festive tradition in full swing.

    Those, ahem, wonderful lights that people adorn their houses with. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but some of them, come on.

    But have you ever noticed? You never, ever see anyone putting them up. They simply appear. And come January, they will disappear as if by magic.

    Apart from at that strange house on the edge of the village where they have kept them up for over five years now.

    Peace etc

    MfR

    PS 50 cents on the dollar

  • Comment number 77.

    LOL Matt - i didn't know we lived near ach other - we have a run-down cottage on the village edge: christmas lights up all year round. Reminds me of that Redneck Woman song .....

    And Crazy Little Thing Called Love was the first single I bought with my own money - I was at Walthamstow Market with my nan! She was horrified, being as she was a huge Al Martino fan (you and your Spanish Eyes ...... )

    Back to the Christmas Lights, me and Himself go for evening walks round the various housing estates here and award our very own "Turner Prizes" for the tackiest, and the prettiest, and the twinkliest, and the chaviest ..... it's a good game! Trust me! Even better if you can't agree and have to retire to the local to sit in front of their fire to chew the fat and decide who the winners should be!

    We're not having a company do either this year. Suits me - way too many politics at christmas parties to enjoy ones-self.

    Oooo my first ever comment on the blog.

    I've been reading this blog for ages now and with CLP away last week I took the oppotunity to read every blog since 2006! Yep it took a while but each one seemed to refer to something that had taken place before so it was like starting a book halfway through and I wanted to go back and read the beginning. It was actually a really interesting read and was amazing to see how CLP has changed since the first blogs. I was also amazed that in 2006 he said in one blog before he had even met Natasha that he was going to buy a new house and find a wife and by the end of 2007 he was in his new house with a beautiful wife and now they have a baby on the way. How many people in this world can decide to do something like that and make it happen within a year!

    Anyway, I felt like I had to post a comment today just to say how much I loved the show this evening. I was wondering if I was ever going to get the fastive feeling this year and by the end of the show my inner fairylights were definiftely switched on! I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's show.

    xXx

    Ah, greyhound_mum, I love the thought of internal fairy lights!! Mine are blinking on and off at the moment, though they're not meant to be the flashing ones!

    Just "listening again" to the second half of the show, great tunes SBP! Luuurve Fairytale of New York!

    Well done bagpuss - have caught up on the sections that I missed now.

    All this festive stuff has worn me out and I've got a long day tomorrow, so it has to be an early one for me tonight.

    Sleep well folks.

    Welcome home Christoph!! You were missed! I take it the postcard is in the post??

    You just tell the 'Do that blog quickly' person that the blog is part of the whole package and needs respect!!!

    Your Mum and daughter must have had a ball this morning!! Lucky lasses!!! I should imagine the boys are quite a laugh in th flesh, so to speak!

    Ok, first Christmas single I received. It was 1980, I was 11 years old, my sister was 2 and my brother was 10 months old.

    It was the year in which -

    the exiled Mugabe returned to Rhodesia to lead Zimbabwe into independance;

    the Alexander Kielland oil rig platform collapsed, with 123 lost;

    the secret attempt by the US to rescue American hostages in the seized US embassy in Tehran failed;

    the SAS brought to an end the seige in the Iranian embassy in London;

    Mount St Helens in Washington State erupted;

    the Marlborough diamond has been stolen in a £1m robbery in Knightsbridge;

    Hercules the bear went missing on the island of Benbecula;

    war broke out between Iran and Iraq;

    Thatcher gave her 'The lady's not for turning!' speech;

    the Queen became the 1st British monarch to have a state visit to the Vatican;

    Reagan beat Carter to become US President;

    the Labour party chose Michael Foot as its leader;

    and we were still in shock from John Lennon's shooting earlier that month.

    Are the memories flooding back??

    I attended my first High School dance that year in deep red velvet peddle-pushers with white tights and a white ruffled blouse, and was delighted to be asked for a dance with Mr Logan, my English teacher, who I had a massive crush on. (May he rest in peace, taken from us at such a young age.)

    And my Christmas single in that year's stocking was Ant Music by Adam and the Ants!!! Lovely, pretty boy that he was!! My bedroom wall was plastered in posters of him!

    Will be back later dear blogettes and bloggers, I have a very unsettled and upset Limpet today, need to go check her temp.

    Huggles

    Can I just say that, I've been a fan of Evo from way, way back and have always liked him.
    But the more little snippets I pick up from this Blog the more I admire him and the way he has moved on in life.
    It is a Cliche, but it's bang on, never believe what you read in the paper.
    Sorry to interrupt, but just wanted to get that off my chest!

    Evening all

    First single bought as a present for Chritmas was Peter Sellers "Goodness Gracious me", either that or the Story of Aladin on a bright pink vinyl 45.

    Great choice SBP one of my old time favs Fairy Tale.

    Well looks like I might have to choose John Sergeant's soon to be released "Lets not fight this Christmas"

    Day two of the Advent calender mmn a One legged Turkey from Icelands perhaps.

    Evening each - missed most of the show tonight (on purpose one may ask!!??)- apart from Bingo on the travel!? What were Bagpusses choices and Jovial ? were you on? (ding dong indeed).
    Afraid I had a senior moment - and left house to take the post (as well as 4 other things to do buzzing in my brain) - locked office then house - opened car - no post! Not even stamped up - all sitting there waiting to be done! duh!
    So been sitting quietly watching the box (spooks was really good tonight) keeping out of trouble.

    Beesmum xx

    Have I missed you James?

    yeahdisc //57 well flippin done - Gold Star - sums aint my strong point but you are Spot On - folk are forgetting they have to go back to the base price by taking off the 17.5 vat then adding the new 15%. saving is peanuts!

    Chris,

    IF you fancy destroying what little self esteem I have left, I'm pretty certain that "the Frog Chrous" aka "We all stand together" by Paul McCartney was one of the first records I recieved..

    Don't tell anyone... Please? :(
