I LOVE MY DENTIST.

Chris Evans | 16:27 UK time, Friday, 1 February 2008

Well when I say I love him what I mean is...

...that I like him - a lot.

He is a very pizzazzy dentist with a very pizzazzy practice, movies whilst he drills etc. But the thing is he takes the time to talk to you afterwards and before about what he's done or going to do.

Today he told me that when I was younger some rubbish dentist smoewhere had moved my right canine, along with the left canine the most important tooth in your mouth. Not only is it capable of 80 kg of pressure but it keeps your whole mouth straight, hence if you lose one for any reason you get a wonky mouth. His exact words were.

"If you ever meet him again shoot to kill."

Anyway with that and a brief explanation of how dangerous mouth ulcers are, once again, he earned his money.

That's why I like him.

I love my authodontist - finally went for the brace at 40 and once i'd made the decision i embraced my brace changing all the colours through the rainbow at my appointments. Best thing i did, not only can i now laugh lots without hiding my teeth with my hand, but the headache i woke up with every morning went and i got to have something in common with lots of my children's friends and swap horror stories with them! Never too late.

I love my denist a lot too.

I started going to him, when I fell pregnant with Sprog No 1, who is now 16! I hadn't been to the dentist for 3 years thru sheer terror... another story another day..... v. evil experience.

Anyways, he is very kind and understanding, and still is amazed that 17 years on, I am still terrified, and have to be cajoled into the chair!

Thankfully, my kids adore him too, and No 1 has had braces, and has the finest smile in the world now, which he used for attracting and snaring the female sex, and No 2 Sprog is going for a fitting after Mid-Term!! All is good in the world.

CLP - aren't good dentists just fabulous? Mine is a lovely man who rebuilt a molar with amalgam(?spelling?) so I didn't have to pay out for a crown!! To his great surprise it's lasted more than 3 years... Ah there you go, it'll fall out tomorrow now I've said that to more than 5 million people!

A belated hooray for the RAJAR figures, no idea why CLP was in a tizzy about them, we all know we love the show but maybe we didn't know there were a mind-blowing 5 million of us out there. As Hazel says, it's too big a number to think about.

So glad my one-liner to Clodagh got through despite the 502 msg, and that you had a good 'ole time. As a new blogist, it completely makes my day when a) my message actually appears and b) someone actually replies (too many actually's there, actually...)

Missed most of Wednesday and all of Thursday, so I'm going to have to 'listen again' about THOSE tights. But given the weather forecast even for us in the soft south, I might give the caffeine and kelp versions a miss and just stick to the really thick black tights instead - not glam but v snug!

Wishing everyone a warm and fab weekend, if we don't completely freeze over, I'll be out for a brisk walk on Epsom Common in the morning - look out doggie walkers!

Hi Chris - I heard your programme today - great to drive home with. Anyway, don't shoot the guy who took out your canine there may have been a good reason for it. They often go walk abouts and end up in some very odd positions - in the roof of you mouth or even up under you nose!
What I really wanted to say though was that age isn't a barrier for orthodontic treatment if you really want to get them fixed.
Go and talk to an orthodontist about them - see GDC website - specialist lists to find a qualified one in your area.
I've treated loads of patients over 40 who wish they'd have had braces when they were younger and suddenly realise that it's possible - saying yes to one patient was was the best 40th birthday present she'd had. Go for it - you're not too old.
best wishes & thanks for the show.
    jayne Harrison -
PS even treated my husband when in his 40s - great smile now & loads of life left to live. j

I live not too far away from you - our doggie paths might cross some time.

Fab show tonight CLP & team - I was going to do my weekly shop on the way home but didn't want to miss anything, so carried on driving - perfect timing, you were playing the last tune just as I parked up!!

Have lovely (if snowy) weekends all

When travelling in countries with a large rural population and/or the country has financial difficulties installing water treatment plants, please remember not to drink water in any form except boiled, with tannic acids (tea, please with scones?), or that age old favorite: cerveza.

Also don't floss or brush very hard whilst in particular parts of the world--just a wee bit o a cut in the gum can get the bacteria in there and oh yes, they like your mouth, they do.

I am always stunned when a dental pro pulls a canine. Even if it has grown through the roof of the mouth instead of coming in nicely in line with the rest of the teeth in the gums, a tooth can often be moved into its correct position through orthodontia. It's not so much that the canine helps you bite as that the feedback mechanism it provides (in a good bite) and the way it guides teh teeth when they are moved from side to side can help minimise damage from habits like clenching or grinding - it's called "canine protected occlusion" or "canine guidance" - hehehe sounds like a doggie advice bureau ;)

Anyway, age should definitely not be a barrier to orthodontia, and if you want your teeth to serve you as well as possible to the end of your days, then it could possibly be a good idea for you, depending what is going on with your bite. No idea why your dentist was so negative about it. Ortho is definitely not just for kids any more - about 40 % of my ortho's patients are adults. Certainly you cannot do everything in adult cases (or do everything in the same way) that you can achieve with kids, but the results can still be amazing.

Why not mosey over to www.ArchWired.com and take a look both at the main site and especially at the forums - meet and greet the many adults in braces who participate there - no small number of them in the UK.

As to mouth ulcers, if they trouble you, we have plenty of info and tips on ArchWired that might help.

By the way - braces don't slim you - sorry. Whilst there may be some weight loss in the initial stages of getting used to the braces, that will all be regained as soon as normal eating habits are resumed.

    Hi Chris

Do I sympathise about the canines! I had all four removed when I was ten and every dentist I have ever visited (and there's quite a few as I am a tad phobic) has taken one look in my mouth and gasped ' who the ... did that?' I know it makes them sound wonderful but it always leaves me feeling even worse about my
    mess of a mouth!
Still...worse things happen in the world.. at least I have teeth

    Keep smiling
