The Saturdays

(Grant as Roy Walker) Hello Chartblog fans! Mice at the ready, fingers steady, let's get ready to play... Chartblog Catchphrase! Here we go... Mr. Fish is the manager of a girl band called The Saturdays. He dresses them just like his favourite group Girls Aloud, and makes them record music that vaguely resembles said girl group, in the hope of chart success. Mr. Fish releases the band's catalogue, but no single has yet to reach the number one spot. Never-the-less, Mr. Fish perseveres and releases more singles...

Chartblog Vicki: 'Oh, Oh, is it... If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again.'

Sorry Vicki. It's good, but it's not right... And in my very long-winded way of going about it, that pretty much sums up 'Ego' by The Saturdays... It's good, but it's not right...

(. Check out Molly's bad breath at 2:22.)

'Ego' is one of those frustrating tracks that with a little bit more time and care could have been a decent pop tune, but falls short at, well, almost every hurdle.

The verse starts with a Cascada-esque dance backing, which would be great if they had the gumption to build on from it, but it disappears quicker than the girls clothing in the video. Then, the bridge jumps at you so quickly I thought the track had skipped a few lines. The chorus has a catchy enough hook to it, but the production is so convoluted it detracts you from the melody.

At that's not the only place it doesn't quite cut the mustard. The video looks like it could be good if, you know, it had some decent money put into it and I can't get over how ridiculous it is to be singing about someone's huge ego, while you're stripping off in slow motion, throwing the camera lens down your cleavage.

I know The Saturdays have had reasonable success (5 top ten singles apparently), which is an achievement by most people's standards, but at this stage in a pop bands life, they really need to release that one trademark single any group with longevity requires. 'Ego' is a million miles away from that.

Well, there's always next time. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try again*

WHEN , WHEN , WHEN is this band going to release a single that blows everything else out of the water ?????

Girls Aloud did it with their FIRST one , for god's sake !!

The most important thing a pop star possesses is good songs with hooks and appeal in abundance .

Without this , you can look fantastic and have super- charged charisma , but without the songs you are soon found out.

A pleasant tune ,but little substance , very disposable and this is the competitive world of POP MUSIC.
They need better songs with soul and more staying power .

Up , still remains their best song .

Someone on Chartblog once wrote ....

" With Girls Aloud on a break , expect The Saturdays to dominate the chart for a year "

Having your second album in the Top 75 for 3 weeks is not chart domination .

On a positive note , they all look gorgeous and ooze charisma , but is it this or great songs that sells albums ?

It kind of sad because I've actually listened to the album all the way through and I can't see any songs that are gonna make a massive impact on the charts. They all seem rather week really.

Hopefully due to the success of 'Forever Is Over' they can get some good songwriters for the next album, if they get to do another album. Bare in mind that it took Rihanna until her third album to produce her best songs.

hmmm. i dont know what to make of this song. My favourite tune by these girls is probably 'Work', i reckon the chorus of Work is superior to anything they've produced. Unlike harry i havent listened to the album, but i can imagine its full of half-hearted pop songs with moderately powerful choruses, like Forever is Over, which isnt good enough to even think about emulating Girls Aloud.

As i'm listening to Pixie Lott's album at the moment, i can answer you spirit, it's both looks + charisma AND great songs that sells albums, and, as proven with this gorgeous girl, Number 1's.

    *gets Number 1 singles

Im sorry but 'Up' is one of the best girl group pop songs of the decade.

I really do think that girls aloud are very much over rated, yes they are good and they're albums sell, but the saturdays started right at the bottom of the music industry and worked their way up to the top, (unlike girls aloud who won a reality tv compretition and went straight to the top without the hard work)

As for the song "Ego" i think its a chatchy song with actual meaning to it, unlike girls aloud songs which pretty much has the same meaning to every song on every alum they've done in ther past few years.
(which mite have something to do with the fact that every album they have done has been writen and produced by the same record company, Xenomania)

I have listened to every song on The Saturdays most recent album and the one before that and EVERY song is different, has different meaning, has a different beat/tune and doesn't just sound like someone has just used the same method of writing and producing over and over and over again.

As talent goes each member of the group has their own unique voice and style, and above all else CAN SING!!!!!!!!!!
