Saturdays - 'Forever is Over'
Watching the Saturdays new video turned into a bit of a communal experience today when half the office rushed over to check it out, an action that officially confirmed the girls' superstar status (the fact that we then went on to watch that clip of the girl falling over on last Sunday's X Factor is not important here).
And WHAT an experience it was.
You see, the video itself is massively embarrassing. Like on the JLS scale of embarrassing videos - but with at least double the budget. There's just no excuse, ladies. There are hair extensions, fake tattoos, and a cringeworthy popcorn-throwing moment; I was a little shamefaced to have it up on my computer screen, especially when my boss came over to see what was going on.
Then there's the fact that, without much music, the opening is muddled and confused, yet very obvious in where it's heading: and that is, of course, towards an epic chorus.... Luckily though, this epic chorus just so happens to be epically awesome.
But the real question is, is it epically memorable?
(. An audible groan was let out by everyone watching it when Mollie removes her tattoo... urgh.)
As with all Saturday songs, 'Forever is Over' is in the highest realms of the UK pop league, up there with the Pixie Lotts and the Girls Alouds of the world... it sounds slick, it sounds big and the chorus, however expected (and however similar to David Guetta/Kelly Rowland - 'When Love Takes Over' ), is mahoosive and dancealong brilliant.
HOWEVER, it's is not particularly memorable or catchy, much in the same way previous single 'Work' wasn't. To prove my point, I decided to ask Chris and Grant, two of the people who'd watched the video, to sing the chorus back to me. Here is what happened:
Me: Can you guys remember how 'Forever is Love' goes?
Chris: Oh yeah! Yeah! Wait there...
Grant: Wasn't it just 'foreverisloveforeverisloveforeverislove' or something?
Chris: No, no, I do know it... It's like... umm... just a minute.
Grant: Oh no! I know! It was like 'VerseverseverseverseFOREVVVVVERR!'
Chris: No, that's not it, it's...
Grant: Oh yeah, that was Kelly Clarkson 'My Life Would Suck'
Chris: I do know it.
Grant: Hang on, isn't this it on the radio now?
Chris: No, that's 'Numb' by Linkin Park.
Grant: Oh. Then I can't really remember it.
Chris: I can, wait a sec...
Grant: I think the fact is, the song is a bit like reduced fat humous. It's kinda lumpy...
Chris: Yeah, and tastes vaguely similar to the real thing...
Grant: But overall, you're left with this overwhelming feeling of being dissatisfied.
Chris: It'd be fine if you'd never had full fat humous.
Grant: But because you have, you know there's better out there.
Chris: I've got a bagel here, shall we get some humous?
Grant: Let's do it!
Vicki: Ummm, guys, guys, the song??
Chris and Grant: What song?
And there you have it. Conclusive proof.

And you receive e-mails saying how good the new SATURDAYS single is , and you should get behind it....
And glossy weekly magazines give the SATURDAYS single 4 or 5 stars , and tell you it's fabulous......
Ok , let's get back to reality.
Girls Aloud's last lead single was "The Promise " , a huge memorable single that had 4 big hooks and won tons of awards.
"Forever is over " is forgettable , shallow rubbish that is such an open goal miss it's unbelievable !
THIS is your lead single ?
It is unmemorable and is like going to songwriter's hell !
To me "Up " remains their best song . If This is love stole hugely from Yazoo , there was the Depeche Mode cover , Issues came with a syrup aftertaste , and Work vapourised into space .
Forever is over , will be a hit due to hype and promotion and not because it's a great song.
Within the first 20 seconds of the video you get the cringy close ups of the girls, that is meant to make us all go ,
"WOW don't they look amazing ! "
Listen , you are attractive , but if you are gonna be a hit in my world , next time bring a memorable song along with you !

All that matters is that Frankie is fit, but I feel creepy about it because I remember S Club Juniors.

Yep , sorry if I was unclear ,a lead single , is the term used as Curtains rightly articulates , to describe the first single to promote a forthcoming album .
I have heard this Saturdays lead single now 5 times , and as Vicki and her boys illustrate , I cannot remember any hook , melody or tune either .

However apart from The Promise, The Saturdays easily trumped anything Girls Aloud threw at the record buying public from their last album. I also think Up challenges pretty much anything Girls Aloud have ever done.
With Sugarbabes floundering, Girls Aloud on a break and Dolly Rockers flopping.. looks lik The Saturdays are gonna dominate for a year.

If the Saturdays spent less time on their hair , and more time coming back with a decent song , then they might have a number 1 single .
Until then , they will miss the top spot , and I predict a type of animal with distinctive teeth , will beat them to it , for the sheer fact that he has a much better song that appeals to more people .
Give my love to your other half . xxxxx

I dont understand why people hate this song so much! I quite like it! Particularly where Vanessa kinda shouts FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRR IS OVER and I really like Unas voice on the bridge, it sounds very husky, I like it!
As for chipmunk, Im kind of bored off rappers getting female singers to sing on the choruus! More originality please! Not a bad song but i hope it doesnt hit no.1

Expect it to go down next week , and The Saturdays maybe not to have a number 1 single before the return of Girls Aloud......
