Metro Station - 'Seventeen Forever'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 14:52 UK time, Monday, 13 July 2009

Metro StationTime to ask one of the Big Pop Questions Of The Age: Is Trace Cyrus secretly Mr Fantastic - the superhero - or are he and Mason Musso secretly Wallace and Gromit? He's certainly skinny enough to be the former, and looks like he could probably slide under a closed door, if there was something he wanted on the other side - clue: not food.

There again, there's something about his larynx which is pure plasticine, especially as it seems to be interchangeable with Mason's. Their voices are kind of soft, kind of squishy, and leave the impression that you could probably leave your fingerprints behind, if you were to push hard enough.

(. Who wants a toffee-apple?)

It's not even necessarily the squishificating effects of too much autotune, in that they both sounds fairly natural, particularly Mason on the skyscraping choruses. Some of it is the woozy way they choose to deliver the verses, as if the Metro Station joint voice was created by scientists in a lab, rather than a throat in a man. Their delivery is so floppy and stretchy it makes Pete Doherty sound like Noel Coward.

This may be a theme across the entire Metro Station experience, actually, where a conventionally superdynamic, bouncy, happy pop song is given an unnatural sheen somewhere in the production process.

It doesn't ruin anyone's fun - 'Seventeen Forever' is a natural gig high, guaranteed to create the kind of anthemic sugar rush you only get when YOU and YOUR friends get to hear YOUR song played by YOUR band - but it's still there, glistening away...

There again, I guess if your sister is Hannah Montana and your dad is Billy Ray Cyrus, you have to go a long way from normal just to stand out. Hell, I didn't even MENTION the legendary polo-neck jumper of tattoos, did I?

(Fraser McAlpine)

"Their songs are made for the dance floor, with an irresistible beat and just the right touch of character. "
"Songs such as...'Seventeen Forever' are guaranteed dance floor fillers at school discos and proms everywhere, at least for the next week."
"Musically it seems as if this band is just a step behind much of their competitors"

Well in my opinion " Shake it " was a glorious piece of pop , that had one of the most memorable choruses of 2009.
This isn't quite in the same league , and won't do as well in terms of sales but I can see a lot of people liking this song.
It's a good slice of power pop . aimed at a certain audience that will reach it's target.

It will be a top 40 hit , and their voices mix perfectly.

How many of the Cyrus clan are in the video though ?

Hate it. Hate them. Hate 'Shake It'. Hate the video.

I think that about sums it all up!

They're just wrong on so many levels. Their visual appearance tells me they should be so much more hardcore than they are. Yet all they produce is squeaky clean, god awful pop music.

    Eurgh, they make me sick!
