Flo Rida - 'Right Round'

Flo RidaYou've got to hand it to Flo, he's good at the references. From the Apple Bottom jeans in 'Low' to calling his debut album after the Mail On Sunday (a gesture which is not unlike Mika calling his next album 'The People's Friend'), and now using the chorus from one of the greatest '80s pop moments ever.

It's one of the fundamental laws of pop, anything which tips a nod to 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)' by Dead Or Alive is going to be worth a listen. And the thought of there being any crossover whatsoever between the worlds of muscley, supermacho Flo and self-made (wo)man(man) Pete Burns is enough to keep the planet's giggle-reserves topped up from now until doomsday.

Now, before attempting to pass comment on this song, it should be noted that it is currently the best-selling download single of all time. The CD doesn't even plan to make the tortoise run out to the shops until the end of the month, and already this song is vaulting up the charts.

So, even if I hate it, and you hate it, and all of your friends hate it...we're just going to have to accept that this song is going to be a part of our lives for a while, and either give in, or invest in noise-cancelling headphones.

Luckily for me, I've already given in. Even though this is just a song written from the perspective of a randy man watching a pole-dancer and bragging about how much money he has - "a couple of grands, I got rubberbands", apparently - in a manner which would make Akon blush, there's just something kind of cute about the whole thing.

It's probably to do with the Tigger-beat which underpins the bulk of the song. How can anything too sordid be going on when everyone is bouncing around like they're on spacehoppers? Pervy people don't tend to be this irrepressible, in my extensive experience, nor do they come across as sleazy - even while waving their wad (of cash) around - if they're also bouncing on the balls of their feet and looking perky. And that is what Flo is doing, in my mind at any rate.

Can't wait to see what he manages to thow into his reference mix next, mind. The novels of Jeffrey Archer? A hand-whisk? Wispa bars? It's all out there!
