The Twang - 'Either Way'
Anti-climax is a terrible thing, isn't it? I mean we probably all WANT to believe that this lot are in some way the future of music...hell, there are those of us who would settle for them being the NOW of music. But everyone's fragile emotions have been stirred up by certain music publications (clue: En. Em. Y.) who can't possibly be seen to say that a new band are just alright, not when they could claim that their music could call the very heavens to rain down joy upon the earth for now and ever more.
Course it doesn't help when the band is in cahoots with the magazine to talk their own efforts up. You take one motor-mouth lead singer with Liam Gallagher-levels of self belief (and BOY does a couple of listens to this make you realise that Liam Gallagher had a point all along) and one impressionable music journo with a vague idea about 'rock 'n' roll' (the lifestyle) and absolutely NO idea about 'rock 'n' roll' (the music) and it's just a recipe for getting everyone all hot and bothered about something which, if left to prosper unaided, would struggle to manage getting everyone up to room-temperature and mildly-distracted.
So, here's what's REALLY going on here. This is exactly the same as that last song they did - the one that sounded like a slower, Mancunian Hard-Fi - only with different words on the top. The words are a lot more heartfelt, tell a nice little story and aren't a milion miles away from those of Mike Skinner, so they score points there. And it's always nice to hear some self-proclaimed rough-around-the-edges, salt-of-the-earth type discover their inner softy.
Shame the effect has been spoiled by all that over-excitement, eh? Modesty isn't just the correct way to address Paul Weller, y'know...

Have to agree with this review, this is an OK song , but next big thing, furture of music? No.
And NME irritates me so much, they either suck up to bands or write 'music' reviews crticising bands they dont like for their taste in clothes or whatever.
You're chatting s**t man.
You don't judge a band based on a track or two, especially if these tracks are not to your particular tastes.
Listen to their album and go to their gigs and you will see whatthe fuss is about.
They get the crowd goin and make killer tunes.
Bear in mind this is their first album and by the sounds of it there are great things to come.
It is a shame that nme chose to put this band on the front cover, before they even got off the ground. People's expectations were far too high.
I much rather a band work their arse off for a while and earn the right to be there.
The song is ok and the reviewer got it right.
I refuse to buy this mag anymore, i gave up believing their so called reviews. They get it wrong more times then not.
