The Killers - 'Read My Mind'

Post categories: ,Ìý

KillersDammit! What's the point of having standards about the kind of music you like if a band like this can come along and mess with them? It was bad enough when the Feeling did it, but at least they were resurrecting an era I didn't have to put up with the first time around, so there was less to be personally offended by.

(Watch the video at the band's ...)

Cards on the table, as an '80s kid, I don't like songs with those fizzy Simple Minds synths in. I don't like songs with meaningless guff for lyrics like "I don't mind if you don't mind, cos I don't shine if you don't shine". I don't like all this WEIGHT of IMPORTANCE landing on top of my poor ears, dragging them so far down my neck they end up resting on my shoulders like pink and curly versions of those shoulder flaps (real name: epaulettes) on Gerard Way's military jacket.

I can live without the faux-Bono bluster, the wannabe-Springsteen slice-of-life lyrics which just read like a list of unrelated things, and the less said about the totally Edge-mungous guitar solo, the better.

BUT for all that, there's something about the enormous beating heart at the middle of this song which is really stirring. Even the bit where Brandon Flowers abandons singing the tune and just barks like a dalek's dog.

It's gonna take me ages to re-build those mental fences now...
