Comedy pilot premiere: The Adventures of Daniel

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý,Ìý

Dana Stevens | 16:40 UK time, Monday, 16 August 2010

In our final online comedy pilot premiere, we present you with a fine young comedian, 19-year-old rising Scottish star Daniel Sloss from Kirkcaldy in Fife. Despite his age he's already written Mock The Week material for Frankie Boyle, performs across the country, runs his own comedy night and is currently starring in his own show at Edinburgh. His brand new sitcom pilot The Adventures of Daniel is a mix of stand-up, sketches and narrative with his fictional family, friends and girlfriend.

You can read more about Daniel in his own introduction that he's written especially for the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Three blog.

Anyway enough background, you should really just watch it and tell us what you think.

The Adventures of Daniel was written by comedy partnership Tim Allsop and Stewart Williams (who created Channel 4 show Plus One) with additional material from Daniel Sloss.

  • Comment number 7.

Great stand-up, great show. More please.

  • Comment number 8.

possibly the best thing ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ has commissioned. I really loved Daniel Sloss and his best friend. He seems very confident for someone so young - please commission the rest of the series - my children laughed till they hurt.

  • Comment number 9.

Great format and really funny. There should definitely be a full series of this.

  • Comment number 10.

Very, very funny & original. It really should get a series. Thanks, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ.

And I HATE Matty; he makes me FURIOUS (!)

  • Comment number 14.

At last, a Scottish comedy which doesn't take the piss out of Scottish people for being Scottish. Well done, very Seinfeld!

  • Comment number 15.

What a great comedy show! Excellent material based on real life observations. Can't wait to see the rest of the the series.

  • Comment number 16.

Awful. What is this? A pathetic attempt at a copy of the Seinfeld format. Embarrassing. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ, for goodness sake, stop clutching at straws and actually try and find some talent.

  • Comment number 17.

Loved it! Really genuinely funny and interesting--lots and lots of potential in this one. Hope it goes to series!

  • Comment number 18.

I will truly lose faith in the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ is this does not get a series. It is a colourful, addictive and bouncy show, full of quirks and belly laughs.

    I want to see more!

  • Comment number 19.

I genuinely laughed out loud at this
It would be a crime not to have this made into a series

  • Comment number 20.

Sorry Guys. Really don't like this one. Daniel is like-able enough, but its just too safe and boring.

  • Comment number 21.

Love Daniel Sloss - come on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ, commission this rather than some of the tosh you've churned out lately!

  • Comment number 22.

I don't get it. I really didn't like this. I didn't hate it but it seemed quite lazy and not as funny as I hoped. Oh well!

  • Comment number 23.

Loved it, good to see a Scottish comedy show and the way they split between acting, stand-up and random skits is pretty awesome, as well as Daniel Sloss just being a generally funny guy. (: Want a series! At the very least.

  • Comment number 24.

This was dreadful. Daft cut-aways are a tired formula over-used in countless American shows and the slow pace of the rest was simply horrible. In order for such a stand-up character to work the actual stand-up comedy within the show has to be good (see David Spikey's excellent bits in Phoenix Nights), but the material in this was painfully unfunny. Yet still we see the audience inexplicably bursting with laughter?? Absolute rubbish I'm afraid and anyone who likens this drivel to Seinfeld clearly has never watched Seinfeld. And the Susie Dent "A N A L" gag might be a new low-water mark in the history of British comedy.

  • Comment number 25.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, what a talent Slos is!

Really impressed with the quality of this pilot, especially considering that I'd pretty much written off ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ3 as an entire channel, bar Family Guy double bills.

I initially thought, "there is no way I am going to enjoy a vehicle put together for a 19 year old pretty boy", but Daniel is immediately likeable in a very real way. His stand-up bits weaved into the narrative are unique to sitcoms in that they are actually funny. Has anyone ever laughed at Seinfeld's gig segments bookending the show? Thought not.

As with the first episode of anything, it has to go through the obligatory 10-15 minutes of character introductions, but as soon as we meet his girlfriend's family, things pick up, with her father being an absolute stand-out character that I can see becoming a long-standing nemesis to our boy hero.

And I really must add that any show whose final 2 minutes includes the line "A STELLA ARTOIS FLAVOURED PENIS" being shouted is worth the license fee alone.

The talent's talented, the writing's superb, the narrative works - when do I get to see more?

  • Comment number 28.

I rather enjoyed this. There were some moments where it was a little slow. But many of the jokes were genuinely funny and I would happily watch this show again. I would approve of a series.

    Thumbs up to Danny!

  • Comment number 29.

Fantastic, I found this genuinely hilarious and anticipate more!

  • Comment number 30.

Tis properly jokes, much better than some of the other 'comedy' on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ3! Danny is awesome, make a whole series!!!

  • Comment number 31.

Hilarious!!! Hands down this is the best comedy pilot I’ve seen on the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ this year. Witty and refreshing script and Danny is really likable character. Highly recommended.

Cant wait to see the series!

  • Comment number 32.

    Loved it :]
It's so funny, and feels so fresh. Can't wait to see more.

  • Comment number 33.

Loved this. Really funny, a whole series a must.

  • Comment number 34.

    Love the pilot!

Look forward to seeing more of it.

  • Comment number 35.

Definitely some of the best teen comedy to come out of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ in ages! Compare this to previous efforts ('Coming of Age', I'm looking at you) and we see something that is not only funny, but original in both it's humour and format.

Young audiences will doubtless identify with Daniel Sloss in his role as the frustrated average teenager but his real strength is in his stand-up. By throwing in small snippets of this throughout the episode we get something both new and hilarious.

My only criticism would be that the audience reaction in the stand-up scenes should be toned down since it verges on canned laughter and probably does more harm than good to the segments.

Still, if the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ has any sense we'll doubtless see 'The Adventures of Daniel' continue into a series that will mature and improve much like it's star actor.

  • Comment number 36.

I thought this show was great. Great performances from all the cast, I laughed out loud on numerous occasions (which I very rarely do). I'd really like to see more of this show, partly because it was made in Scotland and there's not enough of that happening, but also because it brought a good sense of fun to what would normally be a very boring night flicking through the channels and watching repeats of everything. I particularly liked the toaster moment! Come on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ, commission a whole series. You know it's the right thing to do!

  • Comment number 37.

Danny Sloss is the lol-meister! Funny fresh and loved it! Why isn't this a series????

  • Comment number 38.

What a fabulously, funny, genuine comedy.

I loved the characters in this pilot, particularly Danny and Matt, and the performances.

I would love to see more of this and the clever writing. Nice to see more work coming from Scotland too.
