Here's our regular look at what's coming up under the red button...

Dragons' Den

Dragons Den The Dragons are back for an eighth series and for the first time viewers will be able to press their red buttons to venture a little deeper into the Den. Find out why the Dragons chose to invest and discover how the entrepreneurs feel once they've escaped the rigours of their trial by fire. With behind the scenes footage and insights from all five Dragons the access-all-areas Red Button shows are a must for fans of the series.

On the Dragons' Den website ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 1's Dominic Byrne will be meeting members of the public who will be putting the products pitched each week through their paces. A new business section offers a glossary of terms that link through to relevant pitches from across the series and we also have latest updates from some of the famous faces that have previously pitched in the Den. All this alongside the regular comprehensive coverage of each week's main pitches.

And don't forget you can share your views on the week's pitches via the website and on .

First Night of the Proms

First Night of the Proms "Try to imagine the whole universe beginning to ring and resound. There are no longer human voices, but planets and suns revolving." So Mahler described his Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand which, 100 years after its première and 150 years after the composer's birth, launches the 2010 ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Proms in style.

Setting a hymn to the divine creative spirit alongside words from the closing scene of Goethe's Faust, the work expresses the idea of redemption through the power of love. Mahler uses huge forces: eight vocal soloists, a large orchestra and massed adult and children's choirs, tonight including choristers from three of London's great cathedrals and choirs from Crouch End to Sydney, as well as the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's own Symphony Chorus.

It promises to be a fitting start to the world's greatest classical music festival and a nod to the Proms' founder and conductor, Sir Henry Wood, who gave the work its UK première 80 years ago.

During the First Night performance digital viewers can press the red button to hear a unique insight into the evening's works as three orchestral players provide a live commentary on the music.

  • Comment number 1.

Some good coverage lined up for T In the Park festival

Was very disappointed that this year's Glastonbury coverage was limited by Wimbledon

At one point the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ had the Tennis on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ1, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ2, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ HD AND five or six screen on the red button, making it a total of 8 or 9 possible feeds, however 3 of them were exactly the same.

Glastonbury was massively sidelined, and when the red button coverage did get going it was the same 3 or 4 acts on an endless loop, like the the rest of the whole festival didn't exist.

The red button coverage was appalling compared to previous years

  • Comment number 2.

The Freeview list as frustrating as ever, especially the sport.

With apparently no progress on the issue of finding the space to reinstate the channels (despite minority channels such as Russia Today being able to find the space for a 24/7 channel!) is there any progress on two issues which could hep Freeview offer more in it's existing bandwidth - firstly, having the alternative audio options directly on the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ1/2 stream, and secondly, for things like In it to Win It and other play-a-long type simulcasts having the service overlayed on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ1/2 rather than using a separate video stream.

  • Comment number 3.

Simple comment/question: Why is the majority not available on Freesat but the same programmes are happily allowed on the same satellite through Sky?

  • Comment number 4.

#3, good question. Everytime the skiing is on and they say press the red button now for more coverage I press it and nothing happens, save a Teletext style index on half a split screen. As you say, it must be because I'm on Freesat but I can't fathom how it's different to $KY.

  • Comment number 5.

Hi paul_greaton - to get to the skiing you need to press red and select the "Sport Multiscreen" option (alternatively you can enter page number 3001) This will take you through to the Sport Multiscreen menu where you should see an option for skiing.

Anyone with Freesat gets the same red button options for sport services as our users on Sky and Virgin Media.

    Andrew, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Red Button

  • Comment number 6.

    (Not available on Freesat)

Always very disappointing, can you not the same satellite feeds as sky? perhaps a generic mheg layer similar to the sports multiscreen

  • Comment number 7.

#1 - Totally agree. This year the red button streams have been seriously less quality. Glastonbury was a shambles compared to other recent years, all the staff and crews and hours of VT not shown. Tennis, tennis, tennis, and not a decent british player still in it.
And the MotoGP has been abismal all year. F1-- Brilliant, so the ability is there just failing in management.
Come on Beeb, there are 7 days in a week and many stream channels so get your act together and show some decent footage.
Some of us don't have 9-5's 5 days a week and the time to be couch potatos.

  • Comment number 8.

And what about putting Goodwood FoS on red next week please.

  • Comment number 9.

Any chance of replicating the Red Button Satellite service online for those of us deprived by Freeview's limitations.

The ideal vehicle would seem to be the Desktop player when channels are added to it shortly. A simple overlay would be great.

Or are we to wait for Canvas.

  • Comment number 10.

    Andrew

Further to your reply, and I have asked this some time ago, whilst the sports coverage on the button may match Sky, what about the other services/streams that are missing? Is this being worked on? Are there plans? Surely it can't be right that the only way to get all these ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ streams is to sign up to Sky?

  • Comment number 11.

Why don't Freeview and Freesat get the same as Sky etc on the Red Button. I've just moved to an area that has Freeview from one that didn't and expected to able to view so much more on the Red Button. Surely you shouldn't have to pay a Sky subscription to view ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Red Button coverage when you have already got a TV Licence?

  • Comment number 12.

    @Jake (and Paul_Geaton, and Captjackass):
Always very disappointing, can you not the same satellite feeds as sky? perhaps a generic mheg layer similar to the sports multiscreen

    ----------------------------------------------------------

From my understanding, the Red Button interactive services, are just handy interactive wrappers around the FTA feeds. On my Freesat TV, I have tuned manually the "Sky" "Red Button" feeds as extra channels, so when the Beeb refuses to offer the Red Button services on Freesat that they do on Sky, I just manually tune to the feeds myself.

Andrew (Bowden), approx one year ago, someone from the Red Button Team responded to my question then about "when on Freesat?", and said that they would get round to writing the MHEG stuff for Freesat eventually, but provided no timescales. Any news on that? (it's a very frustrating state of affairs, right now! (still) :( )

  • Comment number 13.

    Hi

Is there somewhere we can ask to get a definitive answer about the services being inferior on Freesat as opposed to Sky please?

  • Comment number 14.

Bit of a waste of the only interactive stream on Freeview only using it for the "leaderboard" - a 1/4 screen simulcast of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ2 with the leaderboard around it. That sort of thing could easily be done in MHEG (indeed it used to be when the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ did a dedicated interactive text service for such events), allowing a completely different video stream on 301 - and from what's online looks like there is only one alternate video stream.

The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ used to lead the way with interactive TV - but now it seems even the Americans are getting a better deal.

  • Comment number 15.

Brekkie, it would seem it's also a bit of a waste of time commenting on this blog, as nobody seems to be reading it at the Beeb... (or are reading it but won't comment/answer questions).

  • Comment number 16.

I disagree i think most people do actually read but only some comment
