Improvements to ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Local Radio online
It was a proud day last November when we finally integrated all our local radio stations into the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ iPlayer. However, as the more observant will have noticed, the audio remained in the same format, Realmedia.
Although our UK wide national stations have been using Flash-based streams for some time it has taken a significant amount of re-engineering behind the scenes to expand use of this technology to all of our nations and local radio stations.
In December we introduced MP3 format to the on demand programmes from our nations stations (Radio Scotland, Nan Gaidheal, Wales, Cymru, Ulster and Foyle), and as of today I am pleased announce that we have extended this to all 40 of our English local radio stations.
So now, when you listen to on demand programmes from any of our radio stations there will be no need for any additional software providing Flash is already installed on your machine.
The improvements don't stop there, in the autumn we will be upgrading all of our live radio streams to the AAC format, and for WiFi radio users we'll also be offering streams in Windows Media.
One of the major problems we have still to overcome is the quality of our source audio for the streams. By their nature, local radio stations are, well, local and thus the emphasis has always been placed on distribution to the local transmitter. As a result we don't currently have high quality feeds of all of our stations in a centralised location and instead the audio used for the streams aggregated through a variety of different methods with varying degrees of quality. Sorting this out will be one of our next challenges!
Watch this space for further developments.

Unfortunately we have had an issue with the delivery of the Windows Media on demand files. As you have identified, this has lead to a short gap in availability of local radio programming on internet radios and similar devices that were dependent on Real Media.
We are talking to the manufacturers and will be providing details of the streams as soon as they become available, hopefully by the end of next week.

Formats
We are migrating to AAC family codecs as the primary technology for PC/MAC/Linux and other connected devices that support it, with WMA available for those that don’t. Due to a number of constraints we had to switch our local radio Realmedia streams off in order to introduce the new formats.
Bitrates
I can confirm the current bitrates of the live AAC streams are 128kbps for the nations stations and 80kbps for the local radio stations. The WMA streams are dual rate at 48kbps and 64kbps dependent on available bandwidth.
As mentioned previously, 80kbps for local radio is the best we can derive from our current source audio. This is something we hope to improve in the future.
Internet Radios
We are aware of the issues with connecting to the wma streams on some internet radios and are in contact with the manufacturers to resolve this situation.
I have asked for the iPlayer help pages to be updated to reflect the current position.

What's next?
Will the national stations also lose Real streams (despite Mr. Cridland's statement to the contrary)?
What about these forthcoming AAC streams at 128kbps - will these be available abroad, and listenable to on Reciva radios?
Will on-demand still be available, with the pause/rewind/fastforward features the Real streams facilitates on Reciva-enabled devices?

So what is preventing you from giving us the same on listen again? Instead of 80k mp3 streams? Now you are are getting a better live stream what is preventing a 128k listen again like bbc national & Nations?
Been away from the bbc radio set up for a few weeks, cheesed off with lack of info,so been making do with decent streams around the world and youtube but if ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ get their act together I will come back.

Since the change from Real Audio the portal has not updated ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Local Radio Listen Again programs. It is still loading the last of the .ram files from the last week in August.
Roberts are saying that the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ made the changes weeks early without informing them and it is a work in progress, what ever that means?
Does anyone have any idea when the new files will become available via the Wifi Frontier portal.
Apart from the inconvenience, what are the copyright issues surrounding programs that can be 'listened to again' over 2 months later?

Follow the link in comment 54 above to the RadioLabs blog for the latest info. The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ expect to start producing listen-again in WMA format sometime next month, so WiFi Frontier will update their portal after that.

I was sincerely hoping to be in a position to announce the availability of WMA for Local Radio listen again content this week but unfortunately our development team have hit another set back which has lead to even further delay.
I appreciate this is incredibly frustrating to anyone with an internet radio wishing to access local radio programmes on demand.
The team are still aiming to get it up and running before the end of November and I will update this blog post as soon as there is further development.
Regarding the quality of AAC streams for ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Local radio; as mentioned previously we are restricted to the quality of the source feeds available at the location of our encoding infrastructure. We are working to resolve this and will improve the public facing streams as soon as it is possible to do so. The nations stations (e.g. Radio Scotland) are already streamed at 128kbps but the vast majority of local radio will unfortunately remain at 80kbps until the source distribution is improved. In the meantime we have been trying to increase the quality of streams at existing bitrates by tweaking the way in which they are processed.

Yes we finally managed to start making the WMA files accessible last week which means that on demand content should now be filtering through to Internet Radio devices.
Also, as rangersman[QPR] points out, our engineers are making some progress on the bitrate front too.

Sadly enough the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ can not fulfill this task because they have changed to Flash, but when we start iPlayer (radio) we get sound for exactly 2 seconds and then the message that 'this service is unavailable'. Why ?
We also have a WiFi radio which seemingly will not be able to receive ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ anymore after March 2010.

This is a DISASTER. Come on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ, sort this out, there are HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of us with such sets out there, and you are not serving the public by taking away this facility.

I hope that the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ listen to your complaint, it will also set a precedent for scrapping not only the intend switch over to DAB but the television DSO - well the same rational applies, many hundreds of thousands of analogue only (that is, unable to accept an AV input from a DVB STB) receivers that will be fit for only the scrap bin...

Hmm, trying to remain polite, but two years ago the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ were already moving away from Real audio streams, the writing was already on the wall...
As for taking the proverbial, no I wasn't, there hasn't been a time in the last 100 years were technology hasn't moved on, formats move on, trouble these days is that last months format is this months deprecated format and next months history lesson.
