Thieves And Liars - When I Gatecrashed Daler Mehndi & The Wolfmen
Any regular listener of the Asian Network can't have missed the explosion of Punjabi guitar adrenalin called 2 Eyes that we played exclusively on the Friction show a month ago. It got passed to us after leaking out of a studio in South London, and we just had to play it as no one knew Daler Mehndi was secretly recording in London with The Wolfmen.
Fast forward 5 weeks later and it's number 1 in the Asian Network charts with people desperate to get hold of a copy. After all this we just HAD to gatecrash the very studio they were working from in South London.
Deep within a vast industrial complex we suprised Daler and the Wolfmen and found them very friendly. They showed us how they wrote songs together (a very organic affair), how they jammed and when (late into the night!) and what they thought of each other (Would Daler understand them as Musicians and could they write killer tunes for an artist who sang in a language they couldn't understand?!).
We also had a very exclusive one to one with Daler where he talked about UK Bhangra, his problems with the Political establishment in India and why he was working with the Wolfmen. We even had Marco (the Wolfman who used to be in Adam & The Ants) playing us Kings of The Wild Frontier while Daler joined in - Yes - T'was indeed a SICK day for a new music lover like me - and you can hear it this Thursday on 'Friction'!
Bobby Friction.
Ps. We also heard the 2nd finished track called Thieves & Liars which is even heavier than 2 Eyes and sounds like Velvet Revolver singing about the 'Kuthay' (Dogs) in the Indian political classes. Believe me people - Daler is actually really pushing the envelope here! What do you think?
Check out the video of the guys live in session:
