WHY NOT MAKE YOUR OWN TEXT THE NATION JINGLE?

Post categories: ,Ìý

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 20:42 UK time, Saturday, 6 June 2009

That's a rhetorical question. Of course there are many, many reasons you might decide not to make your own Text The Nation jingle. I tried to count them just now and stopped when I got to 650. There are however, two significant reasons why you should have a go at crafting your own version of what I like to think of as the most successful jingle in the history of radio:

1. It might get played on our 6 Music show.
2. Making jingles is fun!

There are a couple of ways you could approach the project. You could either make your own completed jingle incorporating whatever elements of the original you deem suitable, as with the Stephen Hawking computer voice jingle below, or you could create a new musical 'bed' and submit it for us to supply a vocal later on, which was the process with Lee Henman's Rock version of TTN, also below. There's no guarantee we'll use the jingle on the show (if you want guarantees, go and buy some electronic equipment, yeah?) but we'll certainly listen excitedly to everything you create. Knock yourselves out! You shouldn't literally knock yourselves out, that would be dangerous and weird, just try to have so much fun making your jingle that you start to feel faint, but stop before you actually pass out.

Buckles, if you could make the Geordie Text the Nation jingle available, that would make the day of so many Text the Nation fans. Including me. Mainly me. Please. Pretty please. Sexy please.

The blog looks GREAT by the way.

Any chance we could get downloads of some of the podcast jingles too. I love the "sexy woman who is too hot" one - but my favourite is the 'ooh shwah, my nipples' jingle - I could listen to that on a loop for hours !

Is there any competition going on between A & J over the number of comments added to each of their blog posts(I don't know if that's what they're called)...its just Joe is currently 3 times more popular than Adam....will you fight over the matter, or just arm wrestle?

i've listened to the podcast so many times, and every time the TTN jingle makes me laugh.

Not sure if we're allowed to add images - but here's what happens when i grow a beard!

Joe's Retro Text the Nation piano-y theme needs to be here, I sometimes go back over a podcast just to listen to it, am I weird?

  • Comment number 9.

Joe's piano RTTN is a beautiful slice of some sort of wonderful thing, I can relate to your behaviour fluffy-k.

Adam's rock TTN is pretty amazing too BUT is the guy who composed it not called Lee Henman? The tags say Len, this is a disgrace and better result in some sort of violent punishment...
I don't care who gets punished, as long as it happens and is violent.

    Tanks!

    A very Happy Birthday Buckles!

I must say that this is the first blog I have attended, and so far it is so much fun I am having to sit down with a nice cup of tea, to stop myself from jumping up and down laughing and clapping.

You wanted so creative stuff. Well here is the first episode of seven of my own scifi webshow. It is called Barry the Demon Hunter. I hope you like it. No juvnillia more middleagedillia.

    Kindest Regards

    Gentleman Olly

    Love You.

    ;-)

    GO

p.s Why has Joe got so many more comments?

p.s.s Why do you both look so tired in you blog photos?

p.s.s.s Why in your photo in the bbci listen again site are you so blurry it looks like someone has smeared vasoline on the lens. I know your both in your 40s but do you have that many lines.

P.s.s.s.s You are also the wrong way around.. Joe then Adam.... I'm off so another sit down.

TTN is one of my favourite jingles, after listening to the show i spend the rest of the day humming and giggling to myself (and being avoided by people). May i also say that you look ridiculously handsome in that photo Dr Buckles, very Bond-like. Keep up the funny!

I would really like to write a jingle for text the nation but unfortunately i don't have the technical ability or musical skills to do this, but this will not stop me from enjoying everyone else's sterling efforts.I really have got to say this is the best show on the Big British Castles schedule and should be made compulsory listening to everybody (excluding anyone already listening compulsory)anyway thanks again for a great show, you boys really are crazy, oh and by the way tried to download latest podcast from sat 13th june on itunes to listen to at work tonight guess what not available. come on lads make a bit more effort for us poor old night workers keep it real

Hey there webmonkeys, I wondered where the best place to send/post TTN jingles would be? I've emailed it in in the past but just wanted to check that it was the jingle that was lacking rather than my skill at following simple instructions.

  • Comment number 15.

I have to say that the Geordie version had to be my current favourite jingle ever, but it's followed disturbingly closely by the 6 year old girl version, which is genius as well. As a crummy amateur musician I might have a go myself, but know that anything I make can only lag years behind those 2 jingles.

The death metal retro text the nation was great. He should do a cover of Blahbloobiddybaya.

  • Comment number 20.

That was my son who did the death metal retro! I just tried to ring him to pass on your advice, but he didn't answer, so I left a message with your suggestion. His version of Britney Spears' Toxic is very impressive.

I would like to make a jingle but I know from past attempts at making any kind of music it quickly degrades into running my finger up and down the keyboard just to make a pleasing ascending then descending sound. This I feel will not get played on the show, I would feel bad, it may even make Adam, in his shouty voice shout "THIS IS RUBBISH, NOT THE SORT OF THING WE WANTED AT ALL" How would I feel then? not good thats how i'd feel! Best leave the jingles to more talented people then.
What I would like is to have the RTTN jingle (piano version) without Cornballs singing! as a ringtone for my phone. This has the potential to be the new "Stephen" with people knowingly eyeing each other as their phones go off with the RTTN jingle. It could be as pleasing to the nations ear as the Nokia theme.
If you do, do this can you make it download in a format that will play on my iphone as my IT skills are slightly worse than my musical ones and I end up running my fingers up and down the keyboard trying to make it download.
    Thanks

Now look here, I’ve just been listening to the 10/10/09 podcast (sorry I was absent for the show, an proper signed excuse note from my mum can be provided in future if necessary) and Song Wars seems to have turned into Jingle Wars. I’m sure I’m not the only listener who appreciates all of Adam’s jingles; we’ve just been slack in sending our praise!

I especially enjoy the top of the hour Big British Castle ones, which I like to hum on my way to work on the lonely cycle paths of Norfolk, and the French café song, and the Bowie style 'final linky' end of Podcast jingle…these are stuck in my head more often than actual music...and I like all the little strange trumpy ones as well..they all make me happy.

So there you go - some jingle esteem!

  • Comment number 24.

Mmmmm. I'm not sure if we should placate Adam with jingle praise. The tantrums he throws are terribly undignified and shouldn't be indulged. I certainly wouldn't tolerate them in my own children (if i had any). He should apologise to Joe and all the listeners for being so selfish.

My favourite is the "Great times, great friends...." one. Love it. More of that please.

I meant to also say, my partner's 6 year old gets the main Text The Nation jingle mixed up with Crazy Frog! His eyes light up when it starts but then he just starts looking confused.

I also just got my first ever mp3 playing phone, so I'm getting stupidly excited about the next phone call I get because it's going to set off the Um & Er Song...
