Explore
the smaller ponds and you will find a huge numbers of frogs, toads
and newts, including the Great Crested Newt. Fens Pools has one
of the largest populations of Great Crested Newt in the UK.
Around
the Pools and ponds is a mosaic of scrub, grassland and pioneer
vegetation. All are natural colonisers of the abandoned waste of
the area's coal and iron industries. A habitat of unusual plants
have developed here, such as Blue Fleabane and Musk thistle.
The
reserve has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
