The Moon

Description

The Moon is a huge ball of rock in space which orbits the Earth. On the Moon there are mountains and flat areas called 鈥榮eas鈥, although there is no water present. The Moon鈥檚 surface is covered in craters caused by meteor impacts. The Moon is not a source of light. We only see the Moon when light from the Sun falls on it and is reflected back to us on Earth. This clip includes footage of the first landing on the Moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used as an introduction to the Moon, as part of a larger topic on Space. Ask the students to write or draw their impressions of the Moon after looking at various images online. How is it similar to Earth? How is different? What might you see if you visited the Moon? Is it smaller or larger? Could you live on the Moon? After watching the clip, students could add key scientific facts that they have learned to their work.
