Day and night
Day and night look very different.

We live on planet Earth. It is a giant ball floating in space.
The Sun is a really REALLY big star which is very hot and very bright.
It warms up the Earth and gives us light.
This half of the Earth is lit up because it is facing towards the Sun.
The other half of the Earth is in darkness because it is facing away from the Sun.
The Earth is always spinning round and round.
Let鈥檚 look at how this creates day and night.
Here is Scotland.
It has just moved round from the dark into the sunlight.
This means that the day is just beginning in Scotland and the Sun is rising in the sky.
This is Sam.
He鈥檚 had his breakfast and now he's off to meet his friends.
Have a great morning Sam!
But it isn鈥檛 morning everywhere.
On the other side of the planet is a country called Australia.
It has moved from the sunlight into the shade which means it is the beginning of night time in Australia.
At night time we can鈥檛 see the Sun.
If you go outside on a clear night you can look up and see the Moon, the stars and the patterns they make in the sky.
This is Nina.
She鈥檚 yawning because it鈥檚 bed time in Australia.
Goodnight, Nina.
As Nina sleeps, Australia moves all the way round the dark side of the Earth, back towards the sunny side.
But on the other side of the planet, this same movement means that Scotland moves through the sunlit side back towards the darkness.
When it鈥檚 in the shade that means it鈥檚 night time in Scotland.
Now Sam is yawning.
Time for bed Sam.
And at the very same time Australia has moved back round into the light, which means it鈥檚 morning in Australia.
Nina鈥檚 taking her dog for a walk. Good morning Nina!
It takes twenty four hours for the Earth to complete one full spin.
This is how we measure one day.
The Earth is always turning around slowly even though you can鈥檛 see or feel us turning.
The part of the Earth that is facing the Sun has the Sun鈥檚 light shining on it and has daytime.
The part of the Earth facing away from the Sun is in darkness and has night time.
So when it is day time we are facing towards the Sun but as the Earth spins and we turn away from the Sun, we move into night time.
Can you tell where the Sun is compared to the Earth?
The Sun is on the left side of Earth here.
We know this because the side of the Earth facing the Sun is being lit up.
What difference can you see between Scotland and Australia?
Scotland has just turned into the Sun's light and is starting a new day.
Australia, being on the other side of the Earth, has turned out of the Sun's light so will be in night time.
In winter nights are really long and days are short. So it will be dark in the morning when you get up and dark long before you go to bed.
In summer the days are really long and the nights are much shorter. It will be daylight when you get up and go to bed.
Earth
We live on a planet called Earth. This is what Earth looks like from space.

The yellow and green areas show where there is land.The blue parts are sea.The white areas show clouds.
We can see all these clearly because they are lit up by the Sun.

Everything looks much darker. That is because this part of the Earth is not lit up by the Sun.
Can you see some bright spots? These are where there are cities and towns. They look bright because of lights in the streets, or from buildings or traffic.
You can still see clouds but these look much darker than before because they are not lit up by the Sun.
What is the Sun?
The Sun is a star but it doesn't look like other stars. That is because it is much, much closer to Earth than any other stars.
Like all stars, the Sun is a big ball of gas. All this gas is so hot that it glows, just like a fire does.
The Sun gives us light that makes our days bright. And heat from the Sun keeps our planet warm enough to live on.

What is the Moon?
The Moon is a ball of rock which spins around the Earth.
It does not give out light like a star. The Moon looks bright because it reflects light from the Sun.
Just like the Earth, the side of the Moon facing the Sun is lit up. The other side is in shadow.
The Moon is always a sphere. But it sometimes appears to be a different shape.
Sometimes we can see all of the side of the Moon that is lit up. Sometimes we see some of the lit up side and some of the side in shadow. This is why the Moon seems to change shape.

People called astronauts have been to the moon. The moon is made of rock.
They travelled to the moon in a rocket and need special suits to protect them.
