The 1963 March on Washington

Description

In 1963, a quarter of a million people marched on Washington to highlight racial injustice and to put pressure on Congress to pass Kennedy鈥檚 Civil Rights Bill. The march was made up of both blacks and whites, with thousands of others offering their support behind the scenes. The event received worldwide media coverage, but the federal government took no political action to deal with the issues raised.

Classroom Ideas

Students could look into what support did the civil rights movement had. They could investigate the growing support from white society, looking for reasons for it and the impact it had. Debate what place opinion from outside the USA had on political change. Watch or listen to Martin Luther King鈥檚 鈥業 have a dream鈥 speech and discuss how much his dreams have been achieved.
