Around the world, hunger and limited access to food is still a major problem for millions of people. Ending hunger so that all people have the nutrition they need is one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The United Nations have issued 17 ambitious goals to try and build a better, fairer, and more sustainable future for the world.

However the UN recognises that hunger is complex and is not just a problem that not enough food is being produced. Hunger can have many different causes:

  • poverty - families can't afford the food they need
  • war and conflict - farming and food production stops or food supply chains are blocked or broken
  • disease - people can be too ill to grow food, or cannot work and so cannot afford food
  • natural disasters, such as floods or drought - crops can be destroyed or fail
  • hidden hunger - people do not have the right foods to provide the nutrition they need

  • In 2019 around 2 billion people in the world did not have regular access to safe, nutritious food
  • In 2019 nearly 1 in 10 people in the world were exposed to severe levels of food insecurity
