Arguments against Union with England
Economic
Many said that Union would lead to an increased taxation and that English trading interests may have been seen as more important, like with the Darien scheme.
There were also fears that English merchants would come north and dominate the Scottish markets with the particular threat to manufacturing by English producers of better-quality and lower-priced goods.
Also, English currency, weights and measures would be used in Scotland, and Europe would favour English trade over Scots.
Political
There was the fear that Scottish MPs would lack representation in the British Parliament and the Scottish tradition of MPs standing up to the monarch would disappear.
Jacobites also feared the Hanoverian succession in Scotland.
Culture
There was a common belief that Scotland would become 鈥淪cotlandshire鈥, as if it was a part of England.
Many university professors saw Union as a threat to Scottish legal and educational traditions.
Religion
Episcopalians feared that a British monarchy would always favour a Presbyterian Church in Scotland. Some feared future domination by the Church of England, leading to the return of bishops.
