The Triangular TradeThe Zong, 1781-1783

The trade in enslaved Africans is estimated to have forced 15 million or more people from Africa to provide enslaved labour in the Caribbean and Americas. Over 2 million African people are thoughts to have died on the journey across the Atlantic. However, this trade brought vast wealth to Britain and was allowed to continue for hundreds of years.

The Zong case shows how terrible conditions were on the Middle Passage and how little worth the lives of enslaved people were held in

The Zong was an overloaded slave ship which crossed the Atlantic in 1781.

The ship missed its destination in the Caribbean and had to spend an extra three weeks at sea.

Drinking water was growing short and sickness had spread.

Approximately 131 captive African people were thrown overboard by the slavers.

The crew were brought to trial in 1783, although the case was heard as an insurance dispute not a murder trial.

The case came to symbolise the horrors of the Middle Passage and strengthened the abolition campaign.
