Asking permission to use written documents

The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Written Archives Centre holds thousands of documents comprising scripts, internal and external correspondence and other kinds of working papers that have been created by the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ and a wide range of other parties. Virtually all of our material is still in copyright, some of which is owned by the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ and some by others.

The terms for accessing our material initially cover research use only. Any subsequent reuse or publishing of material needs to be licensed and requires the consent of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ and any other relevant copyright holders.

If you wish to quote from or reproduce any ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ written material (sourced from the Written Archives Centre or elsewhere) in your work (such as dissertations, theses, books, journal articles, websites, exhibitions etc.) then you will need to request permission using our Permission to Use Form.

We are able to process most requests for using small amounts of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ written material via this form, but we are unable to alter any of the terms. Standard requests usually take us around 6 to 8 weeks to process, as we need to look through the content and check for any rights issues.

If you wish to reproduce large quantities of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ written archives material, or your intended use is not covered by the terms, we will need to refer your request and it may take substantially longer to process.

We are not able to license any sound, audio-visual or photographic material sourced from within the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ or elsewhere. All requests for clearance of this type of material should be directed to the  area of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ’s Terms of Use webpage.

Non-³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Copyright Material

Not all ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ written content is ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ copyright. We can provide some guidance on whether specific documents are likely to be ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ copyright, but it is the responsibility of the author to ensure that permission is obtained from all relevant copyright holders.

We are unable to help trace third party rights holders or assist with clearing any third party rights.

Please note that copyright in the Radio Times and The Listener is no longer owned by the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ. Permissions to reproduce quotations from these periodicals should be directed to  who are the current copyright holders.

Submitting a request to publish

If you would like to re-use or publish any ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ written content, please download and complete a ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Written Archives Centre Permission to Use Form.

Please submit the relevant sections of your manuscript, with the extracts of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ material clearly highlighted, together with your completed Permissions to Use Form. Advice on completing the form is available in the guide to completing the Permissions to Use Form.

Our terms of agreement

If we are able to agree to your request, we will sign the Permission to Use Form and return a copy of it to you. If there is a fee involved, we will also send you an invoice. There is more information about our fees below.

Please note that you will always be asked to acknowledge the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Written Archives Centre as the source of the material, and to refer to the extracts you use with their file or document reference. You will also need to ensure that you have cleared any third party rights with the relevant rights holders.

Fees

Under the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ’s , the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ must license any commercial use of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ content and reproduction fees may apply. Whether or not a fee will be charged depends on the amount of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ copyright material you wish to use and the nature of your publication – see our Licensing and Reuse Fees table for more information. If your work is of an academic or non-commercial nature, we will apply a 50% discount to our rates, and will allow you to use 50% more material before a fee applies compared to non-academic works.

We have structured our fees in a way which means that for most of our typical users wishing to use short extracts of our material, there won’t be a charge. These fees cover the use of short extracts within journals and books (print & online). For more commercial types of use such as broadcasting, commercial websites, newspapers or exhibitions, please contact us.

For the avoidance of doubt, we do not apply fees to academic works such as theses or dissertations; however you do still need permission to include ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ content. If such works are later turned into books or journal articles etc., you will need to re-apply and fees may apply.
