Continuing violence makes reconstruction very difficult

Billions of dollars are being poured into Afghanistan.

The money is being used to turn people away from the Taleban and towards the Afghan government.

However, development aid is almost impossible to deliver where violence is still rampant.

Jill sent this report from Sangin, a front line in the East of Helmand Province.

The vast majority of children in Helmand cannot go to school

Winning the hearts and minds of people in Afghanistan has been a key strategy of the international forces, whose aim is to persuade them that their lives will be better if they support the Afghan government and not the Taleban.

However, in violent provinces like Helmand, many are far from convinced.

Jill sent this report from a school in Lashkar Gah.

Women prisoners:

A functioning judicial system is seen as a basic hallmark of democracy.

In Afghanistan, however, many people - and especially women - still struggle to get justice.

Jill gained rare access to women inmates in Helmand's main prison at Lashkar Gah.

Lack of security:

In her final report of the week, Jill reflects on the challenges of bringing development to the region in the context of the ongoing security situation.

It is not possible to build a school or a clinic, or run a functioning democracy, without security and most Afghans put it at the top of their list of concerns.
