Today's Phrase
To 'spice something up' literally means to make food or drink spicier. You can also 'spice up' things like speeches, performances and events: by adding parts which make them more interesting and exciting.
Examples:
This salad was a bit boring so I spiced it up with some chilli sauce.
Martin's speech was really dull. He should have spiced it up with some jokes!
Take note
If you describe someone as 'salt and pepper', it means they have dark hair that is becoming grey.
Example:
Mark used to have lovely black hair but now he's salt and pepper. But you know what, I like it!
Interesting fact
Paprika is a spice made out of dried and ground chilli peppers. It is popular in the cuisines of Hungary, Spain and Mexico, and is higher in vitamin C than some citrus fruits.
