Almost famous

This week Kate and Neil discuss the television talent shows which have recently become so popular around the world. Who is the man behind the programmes and can any of the aspiring stars expect a long term singing career after appearing on them?

events where people compete to show how skilled they are in a particular area, for example singing or dancing

winning format

the structure of the show which has proved to be very successful

mainstream

unoriginal, predictable, normal and accepted by most people

to put (someone) down

to be rude and insult somebody as a person or their ability to do something well

ego

to describe someone as having an 'ego' is to say that they have a good opinion of themselves, a heightened feeling of their own importance and ability. It is mainly used in a disapproving way

driven

when someone is determined to achieve something or be successful in a certain area

artistic ambition

the desire to be successful in doing something creative

short lived careers

a job that doesn't last long
