 A diary and a pen

This week Kate and Neil discuss diaries - why we write them and why we find the prospect of reading someone else's so appealing.

This week's question: The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the world's best known diaries. How many people have read it since it was published in 1947?

Vocabulary

reassure

to comfort someone and stop them from worrying about something in particular

to rush

to go past very quickly

to pin down

to focus on something - if you pin something down, you are able to see it clearly

traumatic

when something causes emotion shock and is upsetting

missed opportunities

a phrase we used to talk about situations in the past when we had the possibility of doing something but never did it. There is often a feeling of regret when people talk about missed opportunities

time capsule

a type of container which is filled with objects considered to be typical of the present period in history and then buried so they can be dug up and studied at some point in the future
