Today the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ in a series of special reports is throwing a spotlight on the recently launched fibre optic cable in eastern Africa.

Several cables are planned for the continent but the first one to land in East Africa is run by the privately funded venture SEACOM.

Africans are to benefit from a more efficient, faster and cheaper broadband service instead of the previous satellite connection which is slower and more expensive.

Well the Kenyan government launched a programme of digital villages that supports entrepeneurs to set up ICT centres in rural areas. The hope is to get more and more Kenyans connected - particularly in remote areas.

Josphat Makori visited one such centre in the east of the country to see how they work and what kind of an impact they are having.
