The view looking down onto Whitesands beach by Arwyn Harris.
An easily accessible surfing spot in North Pembrokeshire that can hold sizeable waves.
A popular spot for surfers making the trip down to Newgale, this beach is generally a little more sheltered from the wind thanks to Ramsey Island.
That said, the beach still holds fairly large waves - occasionally up to ten feet in height, so it's largely dependant on the angle of the swell.
The bay shrinks considerably as the tide pushes in, so becomes crowded on good days. It's therefore best to surf here from mid through to high tide.
The take off known locally as 'the elevator' is found at the north end of the headland but you'll find various peaks along the beach to surf at different stages of the tide.
Hollow waves at Whitesands
There have been many classic days here over the years with offshore winds holding open big, gaping tubes for surfers to pull into.
The beach is manned by lifeguards during the summer months and is fairly safe for swimming on calmer days.
When the surf's up, the rip tends to drag you towards the rocks so something to be aware of, but you can also use this to your advantage by getting 'out the back' quicker on bigger days if you're experienced.
You can park right next to the beach to check the surf but you do have to pay for the privilege in summer.
There are plenty of facilities close by including a cafe, campsites and St David's - (Wales' smallest city) is just down the road. Here you'll find surf shop for the latest surf report as well as the cathedral, dolphin spotter tours and places to eat.
If you find the surf too powerful at this beach, try Newgale down the road where the waves are generally smaller.
