Rhydymwyn Valley Works

During World War Two, this site near Mold was a top-secret weapons site. Now, disused and overgrown, the whole site is developing into an amazing nature reserve.
Mammals, birds, reptiles and insects have squatted in and around the shells of the munitions factory building, including some rare species. Long-eared bats and lesser horseshoe bats are just two of eight bat species at the reserve.
More than 60 species of birds have been recorded, and flowers at Rhydymwyn include common spotted orchids and the rare bee orchid. Otters, grass snakes and kingfishers can also occasionally be spotted.
Unfortunately it is necessary to book if you want to visit, but it's well worth a look.
