Scrapbooking Memories

By Sharon Coates
October 2006, Newport
A digital story from Capture Wales
Sharon's memory has been slowly deteriorating since diagnosed with an optic aneurysm, but she's found a way of telling the story of important family moments through scrap-booking.

"Since I was young I've always loved to design and create food and cakes so a catering course was the obvious choice. I liked being to be able to use my creative flair.

Years later I met Mike in Cardiff. We moved up to Newport to start a new life together. I designed and planned our wedding from the cake to the table decorations and enjoyed it so much I was considering being a wedding co-ordinator. It was a perfect day, making my life complete. But within four months there was a dramatic change.

I was taken into hospital with an optic aneurysm and ended up in intensive care. I was meant to be in hospital for only a few days but came out a month later having missed most of the summer holidays with my daughter.

Since that time, my memory has slowly been deteriorating and the most basic things are difficult to remember and never to come back.

The hardest has been losing the special memories with my daughter and family. I'll never forget that I love them, but I often forget the details of our times together.

So, I've taken up scrap booking. It gives me a way of telling the story of our family life using the same creativity I once used in my cooking.

Even though the pages can't help me to remember, I know that they show important moments of my life and that can both break my heart and make me so proud."

"Wow, this story was very well done, I liked how you started talking about your creativity involved with cooking and then touched on that same aspect again near the end of your story, it made me think to myself and recap what the entire story was relating to. I love how you used scrapbooking to reflect on the joyous times in which you have shared with your family, and although you cannot remember the specific details on each picture, there is a story in which lies behind it, and I'm sure that others can share them with you. I too love scrapbooking and you have encouraged me to scrap a lot of things that I would not have scrapped before, for the simple fact that even though it is not significant, and it may not have a "good" story to it, at least you can always look back and know that you had a great time while sharing moments with others."
