The Young, The Old and The Rhondda

By Lawson Jones
30 November 2007, South East Wales
A digital story from Rhondda Lives!

"In my family we keep a lot of record books and photo albums, and as a kid you obviously want to know, well what's this, what's that, and my father pretty much knew it all, all the family history, so I got to ask a lot a questions.

Well, I know that my second cousin, Cliff Jones, played for Wales in the rugby, and later he became one of the big five selectors for the Wales Rugby Union.

Horses have been a big part of my family. My grandfather, the late David Jones, he owned a horse called Bar Tender, which won many tournaments including the 1966 Amateur Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

I would have liked to go back in time and seen for myself the changes in the landscape, how people acted differently. I would have loved to have seen how he was and how different he was. I mean I've heard stories but I haven't got a first hand account. I would especially like to see my grandfather because I've heard so many stories about him and I never got to meet him myself.

I don't think I'd like to live out of the Rhondda because I've lived here all my life and you know everyone, you get to know the place and it does feel like home to you, so I don't think I'd ever leave the Rhondda.

For all the trouble that's here, there's a kind of atmosphere about it, and it's, it's hard to explain. It's just one of those places that once you've been there, you'll remember it for the rest of your life. I think it's such a close knit community that everybody is there and willing to encourage everybody, so therefore I think it gets the best out of people and with so much support behind you, I think you've got a bit of extra drive to go, to get that one better and I just want to be part of it."

"What a nice article from a young lad who appreciates his town history. He`s obviously a proud welsh boy who knows what he wants out of life. Good luck to him, I hope he achieves all he strives for in life." John Tisdale, Northfield, Birmingham.
