A Welsh Passion

By Juliet Revell
July 2006, Simpson Cross
A digital story from Capture Wales

Learning the language of heaven.

A tribute to Pembrokeshire and the language of heaven.

"I was born in Java, Indonesia. I had a very protective upbringing but a happy one living with my grandparents. I was interested in learning different languages and dialects.

I enjoyed travelling, playing tennis, walking and other outdoor activities. Since loosing my grandmother my whole life changed. She died 20 years ago, but I feel it like yesterday.

I met someone special and started travelling world wide. I realised that life was full of excitement with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. I arrived in Wales at the end of a round the world trip and found the beauty of the countryside breath taking, friendly people and the feeling of freedom. I knew this was where I belonged; my dream had indeed come true.

I have to thank my husband for taking me to paradise.

I believe that learning the native language is most important in my new home.

Welsh is difficult and very challenging to learn. At times I almost gave up but my character did not allow this to happen. In fact I became passionate and obsessed to master the language.

I devoted most of my time to reading short stories and poems and found a great pleasure. The emotion in Welsh poetry and music is contagious. I could pour my heart into writing a poem.

The most rewarding experience is that my work and achievements have been acknowledged which makes me proud to consider myself 'WELSH'.

When I showed my family a DVD of me speaking Welsh during my recent visit to Indonesia, my brother said 'BAHASA DEWA'- it's the language of heaven!"

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I worked part time as a tourist guide in east Java before I met Gareth - my husband. I've worked as a translator, a personal assistant and office manager. I'm outgoing, confident and get on well with people from all walks of life.

What is your story about?
My passion for Welsh poems and my ambition to master the Welsh language. I fell in love with Wales since my first visit. It's important to keep the language alive, to encourage people to follow what I have achieved.

What did you find most rewarding about the workshop?
It was educational and allowed me to exchange ideas with others.
