Daleks In Manhattan/Evolution Of The Daleks
Original ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ One broadcast: Saturday 21 April/Saturday 28 April 2007
Director: James Strong
Starring: David Tennant as the Doctor
Constructed in 1892, the Parc & Dare Theatre in Treorchy was originally the Working Man's Institute for the local collieries, as evidenced by the inscription: 'Parc & Dare Workmen's Hall'. It is now an arts centre, as well as home to the famous Treorchy Male Choir.
The establishment's cinema and theatre were added in 1913, and the Edwardian proscenium-arch took pride of place in the main hall. This was the ideal venue to capture the spirit of New York 1930 vaudeville in the episodes Daleks In Manhattan and Evolution Of The Daleks as the interior of the Laurenzi Theatre.
The theatre management allowed the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Wales team four days usage of their premises in the lead-up to their pantomime season. Work on the stage began on the afternoon of Tuesday 14 November when director James Strong and choreographer Ailsa Berk conducted a dance rehearsal for the set-piece of Tallulah's rendition of My Angel Put the Devil in Me - with Miranda Raison performing composer Murray Gold's latest song for the series.
This number was then the main focus for recording through the afternoon and evening the next day when the cast performed to the pre-recorded song. "We were meant to have a glitter ball, and it didn't turn up," explained James Strong of this striking routine as he recalled the scene on the episode commentary.
Doctor Who Confidential were present to cover the conclusion of Tallulah's big number for ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Three viewers the following afternoon, and following this the evening of Thursday 16 saw a shift of focus onto the climactic confrontation in Evolution Of The Daleks as Daleks Thay and Jast accompanied their humanised colleague Sec to the Laurenzi. This major set piece on the stage and down in the stalls, with various stunts and effects, also occupied the shoot through to midnight which wrapped up the week on Friday 17.
The venue also featured in the 2008 adventure Secrets Of The Stars in the C³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures.
