"I love that street. I wrote [the scene] for that street," commented showrunner Russell T Davies in ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Three's Doctor Who Confidential, recalling that Victoria Place in Newport had been the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's original first choice location for the funeral procession sequence in the 2008 Christmas Special The Next Doctor.
However, almost a year later, Victoria Place was able to feature in Doctor Who, but now representing a London of the future rather than the past.
The traumatic and powerful conclusion to The Waters Of Mars, the 2009 Autumn Special, was played out on the cold night of Friday 27 February by a cast including David Tennant as the Doctor and Lindsay Duncan as Adelaide Brooke, the commander of Bowie Base One on Mars.
Having rescued Adelaide, Yuri and Mia - not forgetting the robot Gadget - and returned them to London 2059, the Doctor learnt that he had overstepped the boundary of his own powers to change the laws of time with tragic consequences. With the ominous appearance of Ood Sigma, the night shoot concluded around 3.25pm in the morning, with David Tennant later commenting, "It was a lot to shoot in one night."
Episode synopsis: The Waters Of Mars
The TARDIS brings the Doctor to Mars in 2059, and while investigating the Time Lord is captured by Gadget, a robot belonging to the survey team running Bowie Base One.
At the base, the Doctor quickly realises that the team led by Captain Adelaide Brooke were famous historical figures as Martian colony pioneers... pioneers destined to die under unknown circumstances in a few hours' time.

How to get here
Victoria Place in Newport contains 12 impressive Grade 2 listed houses dating from the 1830s.
By train: The nearest train station is Newport. Victoria Place is a five minute walk away.
By car: Travelling west: leave the M4 at junction 25 and continue onto the A4042. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Kingsway and at the next roundabout take the second exit onto Commercial Street. Bear left onto Palmyra Place, turn right onto Park Square, bear right onto Victoria Road and turn left into Victoria Place.
Travelling east: leave the M4 at junction 28 and continue onto the A4072. Bear left onto the A48 and at the roundabout take the third exit. At the next roundabout, take the first exit onto Cardiff Road. Bear right onto George Street, continue onto Cardiff Road, then at the roundabout take the first exit onto Commercial Street. Bear left onto Palmyra Place, turn right onto Park Square, bear right at Victoria Road and turn left into Victoria Place.
