This short news item covers the presentation ceremony during which a Royal Charter was given to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. The Queen paid tribute to the scheme and her husband for giving young people 'self-respect and mutual respect'.

Royal Charters have been awarded to cities, companies or groups of individuals since the 13th Century. Now they are almost exclusively given to eminent professional bodies or charities that have a solid record of achievement and are financially sound. A Royal Charter turns a group of individuals into one body with accordant legal rights.
