1949: Clothes rationing ends

The era of make do and mend is finally over, as WW2 clothes rationing comes to an end.

Because of fabric shortages, the wartime government had introduced strict rules in 1941 to prevent wasteful cutting of cloth.

Dresses could have no more than two pockets and five buttons, six seams in the skirt of a woollen dress, two inverted or box pleats, or four knife pleats. No unnecessary decoration was permitted.
