1972: Nixon makes historic visit to China
US President Richard Nixon travels to China in February 1972 for a week-long summit aimed at ending 20 years of frosty relations between the two countries.
After a modest reception at the airport in Peking (now Beijing), the president was formally welcomed at a lavish banquet held in the Great Hall of the People and hosted by Prime Minister Zhou Enlai.
In a speech, Mr Nixon said: 鈥淭here is no reason for us to be enemies.鈥
