Victorians thought nothing of spending hours over their room decorations to get them looking just right. When the desired greenery and berries were not available, they would make their own. These inspired holly berries require just peas and wax.

Step 1: Melt red wax

Melt the wax

Place wax in a heatproof bowl or plate and heat until melted. Ruth uses a candle to do this, but you can use a microwave or float the bowl of wax in a pan of hot water.

Step 2: Cover peas in melted wax

Coat the peas

Add the fresh or dried peas to the melted wax and roll around, coating all the peas. You might want to use a spoon for this instead of your fingers, as the wax may still be quite hot.

Step 3: Stick a piece of wire through the pea

Use the berries in your decorations

Once the wax has cooled and set, thread the berries onto to some florist wire and use the wire to attach them to your decorations or straight onto the branches of your Christmas tree.
