It's time to make some music with your toddler and you don't need a lot to start your very own family band!

If you've got some empty yoghurt pots or coffee canisters and a couple of balloons, you can make some great drums to play with! Check out our video below for some musical inspiration.

Step-by-step guide to making your own balloon skin drums at home

What you'll need

  • Empty coffee canisters or empty yoghurt pots
  • A couple of balloons
  • Scissors
  • Sticky tape
  • Pencils
  • Glitter or stickers if you want to decorate your drums

What you need to do

  1. Take a balloon and cut it across the middle (as shown on the photo and video) then place it carefully over the end of the cup or canister.
  2. Stick the edges of the balloon down with the tape.
  3. Get your pencils鈥
  4. 鈥 Use the rubber end as a drumstick and start making some music!

Once you've made them, have fun having noisy fun with your toddler!

Talk to them as you play, saying words like 'bang, bang, bang' and 'noisy'. Encourage your little one to say the sound words as they tap the drums.

If you want to create a mini-band, you could try making your own rainstick or tissue box guitar.

Make sure you keep your toddler under close supervision as you play. Cover sharp pencil ends in cotton wool or tissue and wrap around with tape to make safe drumsticks. Take care to ensure that your child does not handle scissors and be careful of pieces of balloon as these can present a choking hazard.

TOP TIP: Mimic the rhythms your toddler makes. Make a safe beater by wrapping a pencil in tissue and sticky tape.
