Like lots of everyday routines, having a bath can be a great learning opportunity for your toddler.

Chat as you wash and repeat words so that your little one has the chance to connect what you're saying with what you're doing, just like the family in the video below.

Why chat through bath time with your toddler?

  • Bath time is the perfect chance for some sensory play with water and bubbles - it's part of your routine together, so it's easy to make time for play and chat
  • When your child's senses are engaged, they're more likely to learn
  • It's a great chance for them to learn action words like 'splash' and 'pour'

Games to play at bath time with toddlers

An easy way to play at bath time is to get out whatever bath toys, cups, jugs and kitchen colanders you might have and let your child fill them up and pour water from one to the other and back into the bath. As they do this, chat through everything they're doing, using words like 'splash', 'pour', 'empty' and 'full'.

Bubble bath is great for modelling and sensory fun. Try making bubble hair and beards, name them and use words to describe them like 'soft' and 'fluffy'.

You might want to play with toy boats or rubber ducks. You could even play a bath time version of hide the toy using bubbles.
