A passenger plane en route from London to Melbourne has made an emergency landing in the Philippines after a large hole appeared in its fuselage. A sudden loss in cabin pressure caused the Qantas Airways Boeing 747-400 plane, with 346 passengers and 19 crew on board to plunge hundreds of feet.听 The aircraft was able to make an emergency landing in Manila and nobody was hurt. PanicRob McGeenchan an IT Director from Milton Keynes describes what it was like onboard the flight. "The first we heard was a loud bang about an hour into the flight." "Then all of a sudden the plane dropped quite suddenly and the oxygen masks fell down.听After that you could feel that the pilots were making a rapid descent and the pressure on the plane made my ears pop quite painfully. "At the time, none of us knew what was happening or how bad the situation was but the incident was quite panicky" Rob told the 成人快手. ![]() Rob McGeenchan ProfessionalRob went on to say: "I usually gauge how bad these things are by the reaction of the staff.听 The cabin crew were totally professional but you could tell that they were scared, which worried me.听 "After a while the pressure decreased and the pilot told us we could remove our masks. He explained that a door that popped and it didn't sound that bad. We were told that we would land in Manila for them to asses the damage and that we should be on our way quite shortly.听 I don't think even the pilot realised how bad it was. "After the captain's announcement, everyone on the plane seemed relieved.听 I initially thought that this was a bit of a nuisance as I was going to be delayed. "It wasn't until we landed and I saw the hole in the side of the plane that I realised how bad it was and how lucky we were to be alive. I had expected to see a door slightly askew not a large hole in the plane! "You could see that a portion of the hole seemed to be blocked up luggage.听 I guess the next thing would be to find out whose luggage is in the ocean somewhere, but in the scale of things that is of little consequence." EngineersThe flight, which had been due to arrive in Melbourne at 1145 GMT, landed in Manila just after 0300 GMT (1100 local time ). Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon said engineers were investigating what might have caused the hole in the fuselage. last updated: 25/07/2008 at 12:37 You are in: Beds Herts and Bucks > Behind the Headlines > Lucky to be alive...
