In The City was founded by the music legend, Tony Wilson of Factory Records fame.

Shortly before his death Tony called St Albans the new music capital of the UK. On the back of this, SAASH the St Albans Arts Group run by the council are putting on a showcase up in Manchester of the four best St Albans bands!

Phew - after a hard days graft (well sitting in an office drinking gallons of cheap coffee and crunchin鈥 numbers) it was time to head off to Kings Cross for our John Peel tribute gig!

Claire (bass) and I shared a small bottle of Cava with a yellow straw and serenaded the suits and assorted youth with oversized hoods with our rendition of the marky choo choo song - trust me it soon clears the carriage!

Anyway, we got off at Thameslink and had a 20 minute walk down the back streets of Kings Cross. It used to be quite rough around there, full of kerb crawlers and crack dens, but due to the new Eurostar terminal, the area is being noisily citified with Coffee Shop chains, hotels and even, heaven forbid, a Wine Bar.

We arrived at our place, The Cross Kings. The last time I was there was when it was called the Backpackers, when it had sawdust for carpet and Bryan Adams on the jukebox. Now it was looking Bohemian and clean and had a cool rock vibe to it. The sound checks were good and professional听 and was time to chill and have a beer, although the girls went off searching for treasure (well - pasties from the BP garage!)

We were first on and I have to say we played a blinder. We are usually a bit 鈥渏ombal鈥 but that is part of our charm I would say (can鈥檛 do with these over produced over rehearsed tight but dull bands) but tonight we managed to get to the end of songs and remember all the words. John Peel would be proud!听

Grae from Trashville, the promoters, said he really enjoyed our set and so did the sparse crowd. The barman with the Edwardian moustache from South America came up and shook our hands saying he liked it and especially our Spinal Tap parody 鈥淪oldiers Of Love鈥.

Off stage, I had to phone Kelly from the Box Office, the 成人快手 Three Counties Radio show, to do an interview live with Gareth in the studio. Suddenly the nerves were kicking in! She phoned me back and patched me through live to Gareth. We chatted about John Peel, the gig and next week's showcase up in Manchester. It seemed to go OK but think I rambled on a bit as I usually do. Anyway, Kelly the producer was pleased, especially as I managed not to swear live on air!

We saw the other bands that were on 鈥 JD Smith was great a solo rockabilly act who had some really good songs and a big sound for one guy and an acoustic guitar! After him was Kill Cartel who rocked big time and sounded like a cross between Primal Scream and MC5 - rifftastic!

Anyway, we rambled on back to catch the train home, with the drunken suits and youth with oversized hoods and our thoughts drifted off to next week鈥檚 big gig at In The City in Manchester. Oh my god, I am getting nervous already .... more to follow on that!
