An 'icon' is a religious picture used to depict a divine image or story of Jesus, Mary and the saints.听 The word is most often associated with the paintings of the Orthodox Church. The practice of writing Icons began in the early days of the Christian Church when there was a need to get the Biblical message across as simply and clearly as possible. An Icon is not meant to be worshipped per se, but rather it is the person or event it portrays that is revered.

Last September the first Coptic Cathedral in this country was inaugurated at the Coptic Orthodox Church Centre at Shephalbury Manor in Stevenage under the auspices of His Grace Bishop Angaelos. The Coptic Church had purchased the six acres and the house at Shephalbury Manor in 1991.听 Bishop Angaelos joined in 1995 as parish priest.听 The Centre now operates as a local parish for people from as far afield as Milton Keynes and Mill Hill, and from Cambridge to Oxford.听 It also functions as a general centre for ecumenical work and public relations and they undertake a lot of youth work for their own young people locally but also nationally, holding conferences, retreats and sports days.

The Cathedral has been devoted to St George, Patron Saint of England.听 The icons were written by a young member of the congregation, who is currently studying art at University. Listen to His Grace Bishop Angaelos explain the Coptic Church鈥檚 reverence towards St George.
