Saltholme is go!By Saltholme's Emily Smith Excitement is in the air as Saltholme prepares to open its doors, Emily Smith tells us about preparations inside the building... We鈥檙e finally there! It鈥檚 taken more time and, I think it's fair to say, more work then anyone could have foreseen but Saltholme the wildlife reserve and discovery park will open its doors (and swing bridge!) to its first visitors on Wednesday 21st January. It's difficult to find somewhere to start when telling you all how fantastic a place it really is. I know I鈥檝e been really lucky to see the place develop from an empty shell of a building site into what is a simply stunning and tranquil place. I promise to share it! On 21st January there will be the opportunity to see and explore for yourselves the centre, shop and caf茅. The catering team recently had to test out their equipment so the rest of the staff had the arduous task of having to eat countless bacon sandwiches; we definitely recommend you make time during your visit for one. High standards of culinary delights aside, there is also the chance to wander down to the fantastic Wildlife Watch Point. Overlooking one of our busiest pools, you鈥檙e likely to see mute swans, shoveler and wigeon, but also keep an eye out for some other less numerous but regular visitors to site such as short-eared owls and peregrines. If you pay us a visit in these first few months, each time you return there will be something new at the reserve to impress (we鈥檙e nice like that). New trails and hides will open, areas such as the walled garden designed by celebrity gardener Chris Beardshaw and wildflower meadow will be maturing and for the young, or young at heart, the adventure playground will be opening later in the year. So you see, no two visits will be the same and there is plenty to keep you coming back for more. The icing on the Saltholme cake, which is particularly good news in the current climate, is the financial boost that the attraction is giving the local area. More than 20 jobs have been created at Saltholme (many of these posts filled by local people), much of the food in the caf茅 is locally sourced, work contracts have been given to local firms and in total Saltholme is estimated to provide a 拢1m boost to the local economy. Just another fantastic reason why you should come and visit us!
