Once upon a time…

Children and their parents from Abingdon Primary school in Middlesbrough gathered together to talk about their favourite books and write their own bedtime stories.

³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ RaW has now arrived in Middlesbrough, and to kick-off a month of events throughout February, pupils and parents from Abingdon Primary school revealed why they love to read and write.

The children gather round for some storytelling

The children enjoy a bit of storytelling

The children are all part of the Abingdon Primary school readers group, and regularly meet up to read through the latest children's books.

They began the day by revealing what their favourite books are (with the most popular amongst the children involving a certain young boy wizard named Harry) and why they love to read.

Inspired by their favourite authors, they then set about writing their very own bedtime stories, with book vouchers from Waterstones up for grabs.

The parents and their kids also found out how to improve their reading and writing skillsand create stories of their own through RaW by using the Max and Lara interactive website.

Palwasha Farooq wrote her story about Princess Mirror Belle, a beautiful girl with a pet hamster who didn't like going to school:

"In school nobody liked her because they thought she was very bossy to everybody.Ìý Something strange happened in school, she saw a twin girl like her and her pet hamster, just like the one she saw in her dream!

"I like to read so I liked it because there were loads of books and we got to buy some new ones for our reading group"

Athif, Year 5

"The twin girl and Princess Mirror Belle even had the same shoes.

"One day it was P.E and all of the class took their shoes off, and when they came back Princess Mirror Belle wore the other girl's shoes and the twin girl wore Princess Mirror Belle’s shoes.

"So they both started dancing all about. They stayed dancing and they didn't swap their shoes around.

"When Princess Mirror Belle went home she told her Mam what had happened in the school. Well anyway, she went to bed and had a lovely dream once again."

Tabassum Din called his bedtime tale 'The Two Naughty Children':

"One dark night, there lived a girl called Mariam and a boy named Saif.

"They were a pair of trouble-makers. One night their parents told them to put the light out and go to sleep, but they disobeyed them.

"They kept chattering until 12am, and then fell asleep at 2.30am. They woke up at 10.30am and they were late for school, because their parents had also slept in that morning!

"They ran to school and got into big trouble! Next time they knew they had to listen their parents or they would be in trouble again."

The day was an overwhelming success and children and parents really enjoyed getting creative and improving their reading and writing skills. Year 5 student Simra Yousaf said: "I loved it because I like reading books and writing stories so I thought it was great", while Athif Aurangzeb also had a great time: "I like to read so I liked it because there were loads of books and we got to buy some new ones for our reading group".

You can listen to all the group's bedtime stories and find out more about ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ RaW in the 'see also' section.
