'Everything stops for tea'
Jack Buchanan (1891 - 1957) was a singer, actor, producer and director who was particularly popular during the War years.
With so many men drafted into the Armed Forces many factories and heavy industries relied on women to fill the labour shortage. Often staff working in offices and other professions helped too by giving up their lunch hour to help make munitions in their spare time.
There was a relentless need throughout the war to manufacture arms and armaments. Even so, in the words of one popular wartime number sung by Jack Buchanan, at 4pm 'Everything stops for tea'.
